At Problems of Flooding

Bryan and College Station
city officials are searching for
answers to flooding that oc-
curred in low lying areas after
Saturday's heavy rains.

said, "I don't think we (College
Station) were seriously affect-
ed, except in a few areas. You
have to keep in mind this was
an unusually heavy rain in a
short duration.
"With growth there is a more
rapid runoff. It is necessary to
see ditch areas or drainage'
areas are properly excavated
so as to provide adequate drain-
age in the areas of develop-
ment.
"In developing the south side
of the city we are going to ask
developers to straighten chan-
nels before the final building
plans are approved to make
sure we have proper drainage,"
he said.

Creek areas in both cities
were flooded Saturday. Flood-
ing also occured in the vicinity
of the Bryan Municipal Lake
on College Avenue.
Mrs. Dorothy Youngblood,
manager of the Monoco Apart-
ments in College Station, report•
ed flood damage to the apart
ments amounted to approxi-
mately $11,000. The Posada Del.
Rey Apartments in College Sta-
tion also reported flooding.
Residents in the Carter Creek
and Burton Creek areas com-
plained that flood waters seeped
into homes in the areas. Resi-
dents said the rain usually
causes the creeks to flood, but
Saturday was the first time
homes in the area had actually
been flooded.

Bryan city commissioners will
discuss the drainage problem at
the commission meeting April
22. The commissioners said an
overall master drainage pro•
gram is needed for the city and

commendations at the meeting.
