, Shiloh Hall found I
to be not salvageable I
A structural evaluation of the
80-year-old Shiloh Hall in College
Station recently revealed that
the historic Czech community
center Is rotting and not salvage-
able, officials said. ,
The building has severe ,ter-I
mite and water damage and
would have to be reconstructed
at a high cost to be preserved,
said Katie Elrod, city liaison to
the historic preservation commit-
tee.
The committee received a
grant .from the National Trust for
Historic Preservation to study
the structural integrity and feasi-
bility of preserving the Shiloh,
located near the southwest cor-
ner of Texas Avenue and South-
west Parkway. But the city may
now turn to Texas A&M Universi-
ty architecture classes to have
students record the building's I
dimensions and create an archi-.
tectural record of the historic
site, Elrod said.
College Station officials also I
are looking for old photos and I
programs from weddings and
dances held in Shiloh.
Built in the late 1910s or early
1920s, the Shiloh was once the
hub of a vibrant Czech communi-
ty that settled in College Station
in the 1850s. In the 1970s,
owner Ken Martin transformed it
into the Fort Shiloh Restaurant,
though the building has been
vacant now for 15 years.
