HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/03/2014 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation CommitteeMINUTES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE February 3, 2014 STATE OF TEXAS § § COUNTY OF BRAZOS § Present: Committee: Linda Harvell (chair) Jerry Cooper Gary Ives Libby Vastano Louis Hodges Joel Mitchell, arrived approximately 4:11 p.m. Pat Cleere, arrived approximately 4:45 p.m. City Staff: Nancy Berry, Mayor David Schmitz, Director of Parks and Recreation Sherry Mashburn, City Secretary Jared Donnelly, Historic Records Coordinator Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:07 p.m. on Monday, February 3rd, 2014 at the Municipal Court, 300 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors Local resident Mike Luther visited the meeting. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Committee discussed continued absence of Ken Rodgers. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 5. Presentation by Mayor Nancy Berry to update the Historic Preservation Committee as to its status. Mayor Nancy Berry thanked the committee for their efforts in organizing the 75th and commended them on a very successful event. 6. Presentation, possible action, and discussion regarding the 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series, including update regarding specific efforts to secure sponsors for 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series. The committee discussed potential speakers and sponsors for the Exploring History Lunch Series. 7. Report on meeting with City Manager, Mike Neu, Sherry Mashburn, January 22, 2014 regarding balance and use of donated funds for the 75th Anniversary Celebration – possible Committee discussion. HPC Chair Linda Harvell gave a report on her meeting with the City Manager, Mike Neu, and Sherry Mashburn. About $6500 of unspent funds from the 75th remains and options for how to use the funds were discussed. 8. Report on presentation given to the City Council, January 24, 2014 – possible Committee discussion. Recommendations to the City Council for the 2014 HPC programs: Historic Marker Program – need to order more markers; simplify application Oral History Transcription Project College Station History Website Find a permanent display location for the train display from the 75th exhibit at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum Find a permanent display location(s) for many of the historic artifacts that have been donated to Project hold or for the 75th exhibit Replicate art work from the 75th exhibit to be displayed in various City-owned facilities 9. Activity Report – Jared Donnelly, Historic Records Coordinator. Jared Donnelly gave a report on activities. Material is still being sorted after the move from the Parks building. Project HOLD has been updated to the newest version of Laserfiche. 10. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members, which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia.  No action will be taken. Gary Ives presented a piece of twisted rebar from a local bridge possibly built in the 1920s. Lou Hodges presented several old coins. Jared Donnelly presented Herschel Burgess’ ledger book from the 1930s and 1940s that is on loan to Project HOLD. 11. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. No items were suggested. 12. Adjournment MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 3rd, 2014.
