HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/09/2013 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation CommitteeMINUTES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE September 9, 2013 STATE OF TEXAS § § COUNTY OF BRAZOS § Present: Committee: Linda Harvell (chair) Jerry Cooper Louis Hodges Joel Mitchell Libby Vastano City Staff: Sherry Mashburn, City Secretary David Schmitz, Parks Director Marci Rogers, Senior Services Coordinator Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:18 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office, 1000 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors No visitors were in attendance. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Committee excused the absence of Pat Cleere, Gary Ives, Ann Hays, and Ken Rogers, who provided notification prior to the meeting. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 5. Brief meeting introduction by Chair. Chair Harvell introduced the meeting. 6. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series, including update regarding specific efforts to secure sponsors for 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series. Committee discussed the Exploring History Lunch Series. Committee appointed a subcommittee consisting of Linda Harvell, Jerry Cooper, and Joel Mitchell. Marci Rogers encouraged committee to select speakers and secure sponsors, and offered to arrange a planning meeting with the Senior Advisory Committee on September 25th, at Southwood center.Committee discussed potential speakers and topics, including: The History of Churches, with Dave Ruesink. History of Kyle Field Dr. Alston Thoms LaBelle, and the preservation efforts of the wreckage. Committee discussed sponsors. It was estimated that each sponsorship costs approximately 700- 800 dollars. 7. Possible action and discussion of 75th Anniversary related activities, including but not limited to, sponsorships, fundraising efforts, and the Homecoming event. Chair Harvell presented a summary of progress related to 75th activities. She reported that the 75th Committee has raised almost $50,000, exceeding the original $39,000 by a large margin. Chair then summarized events. Dr. Hodges announced that Booneville Days will occur on October 5th, and offered to help publicize the 75th, and requested a volunteer and promotional material. 8. Presentation by staff and committee discussion and possible action regarding committee mission and purpose, strategic planning and overall program assessment. Dialogue to address each individual HPC existing and potential initiative from this standpoint as well. Committee discussed strategic planning and programs. Committee determined to prioritize existing programs based upon support and popularity. Committee discussed website improvements, and ways to incorporate the Project HOLD collections into user friendly online content. Committee also discussed teaching and educational outreach as a high priority. Committee discussed creating improved communication with City Council, and the possibility of creating an assessment survey. 9. Committee discussion and possible action regarding historic street signs. Jacob Morris distributed a memo from Chuck Gilman, indicating that the Public Works Department is in possession of the historic street sign markers. Committee reviewed the memo and unanimously advised that the street signs be restored and displayed in public areas, in a similar fashion to the other historic street signs. 10. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities. Historic Record Coordinator distributed monthly summary to members. He reported that the City of College Partnership with the Portal to Texas History was online, and a grant for scanning services has been approved. 11. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program No report was presented Oral History Transcription Project No report was presented Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series –Marci Rodgers, Ann Hays, Jerry Cooper See item 8 for discussion related to Exploring History 75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Jerry Cooper See item 7 for discussion related to 75th anniversary activities College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano No report was presented Committee made no comments regarding item 11. 11. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. No items were suggested. 13. Adjournment MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:34 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013.
