1. Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell
at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2012 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office, 1000 Krenek
Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842.
2. Hear Visitors
There were no Citizen Comments.
3. Possible action and discussion on absence and requests for activity.
The Committee requested clarification of protocol on absences. Members are encouraged to attend and
volunteer to assists outside of meetings, whether it be taking the lead on an objective or assisting another
in accomplishing theirs.
4. Possible action and discussion of minutes for:
November 5,2012
MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes as submitted.

5. Discussion of 2013 Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series (EHLLS)
Speakers for EHLLS discussed.
o January speaker confirmed, author of Me and Fish Jones, Dennis Bradshaw.
Introduction by Mr. Marshall.
o February, potential speaker, Brazos Valley African-American Museum curator,
Wayne Sadberry. To be contacted by M.D. Marshall. Introduction by Mrs. Cleere.
o March “Junction Boys” guest lecturer.
o April lecturer, committee member Cooper, has elected to move his lecture to an
undetermined date. Replacement to be determined.

o October lecture will be on 75 Years and Growing Strong, topic moved from
November to better coincide with actual anniversary and make room for a veterans
talk.
o November event will now be veteran-related.
6. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees
Historic Marker Program
No action, no change.
Oral History Transcription Project
Received document from Ann Hayes, “Henry Gilchrist – Early days at College Station.
Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series –Marci Rodgers, Ann Hays, Jerry Cooper
Speakers and changes as noted in section 5.
Reviewed old EHLLS speakers list to find speakers that might be invited to speak at future
events. Michael R. Waters from 2004, Daniel Hernandez from 2005, and David Woodock
from 2006 are to be contacted.
Other potential speakers:

o Homer Jacobs and Rusty Burson with The 12 Man Foundation.
o Arnold P. Krammer, historian, on Camp Hearne during WWII.
o Rebecca Stark Nugent (pen name, Frank Mills) author of If the Devil Had a Wife.

o Sunny Nash, author of Bigmama Didn't Shop at Woolworth's.
o Brent Mullins, president of Museum of the American G.I.
75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Jerry Cooper

Linda Harvell reported that the 75 Anniversary Committee was on the 8 of November
at City Hall and the Bush Library exhibit was discussed. Council wants the exhibit to be
free, but the library had not confirmed that at this time.
In need of volunteers, the possibility of increasing visibility for other organizations by
working together could be an option. Anne Boykin with Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial
and the Brazos Heritage Society should be contacted.

We have interested sponsors but need to develop sponsorship packages.
College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano
Mrs. Vastano states that the amount of information will be quite large and introduced the idea of splitting
up the work between several individuals. Committee members Hays and Cooper will co-ordinate with
her.
7. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities.
Jacob Morris was absent at today’s meeting. Ian Whittenton reported that recruitment of interns
continues and at least one interview has taken place. The status of that candidate is unknown.

MOTION: Upon a motion made by Ann Hays and a second by Jerry Cooper, the Committee
voted unanimously to adjourn the meeting at 5:27 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2012. The
motion carried unanimously.
