Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Susan Irza at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012 in the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors There were no Citizen Comments. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. No action was needed. Hillary Jessup and M. D. Marshall were noted as unexcused absences. 4. Possible action and discussion of minutes for: March 5, 2012 MOTION: Upon a motion made by Louis Hodges and a second by Jerry Cooper, the Committee voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed, with MD Marshall, Hillary Jessup and Linda Harvell not present, to approve the minutes as submitted. The motion carried unanimously. 5. Reminder to HPC members with expiring terms to reapply, in order to be considered by City Council for reappointment Chair, Susan Irza encouraged members to reapply if they wished to be considered for committee appointments. 6. Report from HPC staff on activities—Jacob Morris. Jacob Morris reported that project HOLD is being re-organized in line with industry standards. Committee members suggested exploring software besides Laserfiche to support Project HOLD, such as PastPerfect. Jacob Morris indicated that he was reorganizing the database in a manner that would facilitate any future upgrades and/or software changes that may be made in the future He said that the backlog of un-scanned and/or return items has been reduced. He reported that material is being developed for communications and the 75th anniversary exhibit at Bush library. He reported that oral histories are underway. He stated that his office currently had one volunteer, and two more interns are arranged for summer. 7. Proposed Historical Marker for 1009 Walton (Binney Home) MD Marshall. M.D. Marshall was absent, so the Committee, having previously reviewed the nomination application materials, moved to approve the nomination. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Louis Hodges and a second by Libby Vastano, the Committee voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed, with MD Marshall and Hillary Jessup not present, to approve the proposed historical marker. The motion carried unanimously. 8. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program – M.D. Marshall M.D. Marshall was absent Oral History Transcription Project – Lou Hodges Lou Hodges reported that progress is slow, and he will have more information to report next time. Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series – Susan Irza, Marci Rodgers, Ann Hays Anne Hays reported that 98 attended the Exploring History Lecture for March, with 86 paid lunches. 7 attendees utilized shuttle service. It was reported that one attendee received a refund because the lunches sold out. The Committee determined that box lunches in the future would prevent this. Susan Irza stated that the speaker, John Whillingham, sold 20 books at the luncheon. 75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Patricia Cleere, Jerry Cooper, Susan Irza Linda Harvell reported that the 75th Anniversary Committee will meet on April 12th. She stated that planning was for 75th Anniversary is well underway, and called on individuals to volunteer to assist with specific tasks. She encouraged members to begin compiling ideas and materials for exhibits to be used both in the Bush Library installation, as well as at the Homecoming/Anniversary event at Veteran’s Park. It was suggested that ideas and descriptions of materials to be used be given to Jacob Morris for collection and coordination with Mike Neu in Media and Communications. Linda Harvell stated that the interpretative banners were still under consideration. Jerry Cooper estimated cost at approximately $300 per banner. Councilperson Schultz stated that meetings have been productive in getting city support and assistance. The City will be engaging in food sales for the event. Schultz suggested that the Arts Council be contacted for the event. Lou Hodges suggested that quilting organizations may have some material appropriate for the event. College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano, Susan Irza Libby Vastano reported that she has completed interviews for Tony Jones and Dick Birdwell. She asked further suggestions. Several suggestions were made for future interviews, including Homer Adams, John Crompton, Dennis Maloney, Bill Landcaster, Dan Chapman, and others. Susan Irza stated that she would send out the past speakers list from the Exploring History Lecture Series as possible interviewees. 9. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia.  No action will be taken. Lou Hodges distributed a book, entitled Off the Beaten Trail, as well as a wooden Velveeta box. Jacob Morris distributed a highly deteriorated 19th century percussion cap pistol. 10. Calendar Events April 12, 2012 75th Anniversary Committee, CS Conference Center, 8:30 a.m. April 18, 2012 Exploring History Lunch Lecture, “Rudder: From Leader to Legend” presented by Dr. Tom Hatfield, introduced by Jerry Cooper, CS Conference Center, Room 127, 11:30 a.m. May 7, 2012 HPC Regular Meeting, CS Conference Center, Room 103; 4:00 p.m. May 10, 2012 75th Anniversary Committee, CS Conference Center, 8:30 a.m. May 16, 2012 Exploring History Lunch Lecture,“Save the Queen,” presented by Ben Hardeman, introduced by Linda Harvell, CS Conference Center, Room 127, 11:30 a.m. June 4, 2012 HPC Regular Meeting, CS Conference Center, Room 103; 4:00 p.m. June 14, 2012 75th Anniversary Committee, CS Conference Center, 8:30 a.m. June 20 Exploring History Lunch Lecture, “Muskets, Cannons, and Knives,” presented by Dr. Lou Hodges, introduced by Susan Irza, CS Conference Center, Room 127, 11:30 a.m. July 2, 2012 HPC Regular Meeting, CS Conference Center, Room 103; 4:00 p.m. July 12, 2012 75th Anniversary Committee, CS Conference Center, 8:30 a.m. July 18 Exploring History Lunch Lecture, “Brazos River History and Levees,” presented by Wendy Patzewitsch, CS Conference Center, Room 127, 11:30 a.m. The committee reviewed the calendar. 11. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Susan Irza suggested moving the July 2nd Historic Preservation Committee Meeting to July 9th, to avoid conflicts from the Holiday. Linda Harvell, citing concerns related to recent loss of historic homes in the City, suggested exploring future items that would address this issue. The ensuing discussion included the relative responsibilities of the Landmark and Historic Preservation Committees, ideas for incentives to encourage stewardship of historic properties, and possible appropriate avenues to address the issue of loss of historic residential neighborhood integrity. 12. Adjournment MOTION: Upon a motion made by Susan Irza and a second by Ann Hays, the Committee voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed, with MD Marshall and Hillary Jessup not present, to adjourn the meeting at 5:29 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012.
