Approved Absence: Lisa Kalmus, Meredith Waller Unapproved Absence: N/A Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Coordinator Visitors: Amanda Putz, staff assistant, PARD Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Earl Apgar at 4:05 p.m. Agenda Item #2-3: Hear Visitors: Amanda completed the necessary paperwork to swear in Libby Vastano, the HPC replacement for Colleen Risinger who resigned in July. Agenda Item #4: Swearing in of new HPC appointee, Libby Vastano. Libby, originally from Ohio, gave a brief background sketch of her career as a Texas history teacher for 7th grade in CSISD. She is a docent at the Bush Library. Agenda Item #5: Possible action and discussion on absence requests. N/A Agenda Item #6: Approval of the minutes. Motion was made, seconded to approve the minutes of July 10, 2009. (HJ/jm) Agenda Item #7: Possible action and discussion on new HPC Chairman Earl Apgar’s ideas for FY2010. Earl’s plan for the HPC is to become more involved and more visible in the activities of Heritage Programs. WHOOP! Agenda Item #8: Possible action and discussion on HPC Retreat. Earl suggested that the HPC Retreat be held at the HPC Regular Meeting, September 14, from 4pm-7pm. All members should plan to attend for the full time. Anne B. commented that a free meal will be served by Chick-Fil-A due to the mix-up at the July Exploring History Lunch Lecture where they forgot to provide cups and ice. Agenda Item #9: Possible action and discussion on El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Susan reported on the status of the El Camino Real de los Tejas project. The National Park Service (NPS) has declined our Cost Share Grant Application. The ECR committee will continue to research and meet in preparation for a future grant. Due to budget constraints, the City of Bryan, City of College Station and Brazos County have pulled the proposed funding of the trail project. Agenda Item #10: Possible action and discussion on historic street markers. Anne B. reported that when the weather is cooler, the markers that are still in place on Lee Street and on Foster, will need to be painted. Agenda Item #11: Committee Reports: Landmark Commission (Hillary) Hillary reported that the Landmark Commission is still learning about their duties and making progress toward the city’s first historic district. Exploring History Lunch Lectures (Ernie, James and Hillary) Anne B. suggested that we get the 2010 schedule secured as early as possible to aid in promoting the lectures. Earl suggested that we get restaurant sponsorships for the lectures so that we can maintain the quality and caliber of the lectures. He went on to suggest that we introduce the HPC at the lectures to begin our campaign for more visibility in the community. Lou reported that the majority of the Exploring History Lunch Lecture guests are happy with the current format. This was based on his assessment of the surveys completed over the summer. Historic Markers (Meredith, Hillary and James) Anne reported that there have been two inquiries from prospective marker applicants. Oral History Project (Lou and Anne T.) Lou reported that he is continuing to edit the Oral History Project transcripts. Project HOLD (Lou, Colleen, Susan and Anne T.) See PH Progress Report. Education Committee (Ernie, Earl, Lisa and Libby) Ernie reported that meetings with Steve Beachy and Alston Thoms continue to get the Native American interpretive site at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex rolling.
