Agenda Item #8: Committee Reports Parks Project Committee Lou reported that they had not been able to meet with the Parks representatives yet to discuss the project. He brought a few relics of money and flint stone as a show and tell. Steve Beachy has agreed to work with the committee on this after his retirement and Gene Bearrow, city employee is very interested. They will continue to try and set up a meeting with parks staff. Exploring History Lunch Lectures Ernie reported that the next speaker will be A Veterans Story, by Al Meyer, not Al Jones, on November 14. Ernie reported that his sub-committee will get together prior to the December HPC meeting with Marci Rodgers and the Senior Advisory to discuss the 2008 speakers. Ernie reported he would have to miss the December meeting but would have Hillary report back. Anne stated that Miguel Juarez of the Cushing Library might be a good speaker and that we have not done much on the Spanish culture of the Brazos Valley. Anne asked for ideas for gifts for speakers. Peggy suggested we just buy some small baskets to fill with a few items. A city cup, some Aggie coffee and some of Lou’s jelly were some of the suggestions. Historic Markers There has been no new activity in this area. The Roans Chapel Baptist Church will officially be presented their historic plaque at the December 13 City Council Meeting. Marguerite tried to find the small African American church behind Best Buy but did not locate it. It appears that their historic marker may be missing. Lucille Young (resident) or Onie Holmes (resident and TAMU Presidents Home Executive Housekeeper) would be the appropriate people to contact to get more information. Oral History Project Mary Hamlin is still recuperating from her surgery. Colleen copied the scripts of the Campus Kids and Lou and Anne Steen will edit for superfluous language. Hillary suggested that if there are department heads on campus that might read and have information for some of these histories they might be a good resource. Project HOLD Anne reported that she was having some technical difficulties along with added Public Communications responsibilities that have slowed down the scanning of documents. Her report in attached. She brought a copy of a pictorial book from Arcadia Publishing as an example of something the committee might wish to do for the 75th anniversary as a fund raiser. Peggy recommended she get all details in writing to bring back to the committee later. She will be a guest on KAMU Channel 15 Magazine to discuss the Veterans War Project. Education Committee Jane reported that she and Marguerite had made a list of many of the projects discussed at the retreat and that they needed to prioritize the list so in order to determine what can actually be accomplished. Two or three particularly stood out: Hosting a history camp for kids; working with the schools to find out what they need for their history classes and the Parks Project on Indian Life in the Brazos Valley.
