HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/03/2020 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, January 6, 2019 – 4:00 pm Municipal Court 300 Krenek Tap Road College Station, Texas 77842 The City Council may or may not attend the Historic Preservation Committee Regular Meeting. Present: Louis Hodges -  Marilyn Randall -  Sherry Frisk -  Gerald Burgner -  William Wright -  Shirley Dupriest -  Thomas Smith -  Julie Schultz –  David Fujimoto – E Linda Harvell; City Council -  Tiffany Gonzalez; Historical Records Archivist -  1. Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Gerald Burgner 2. David Fujimoto had an absence request. Lou Hodges, made a motion to approve the request. Sherry Frisk, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor and the motion was passed unanimously. 3. Sherry Frisk, made a motion to approve the January minutes. Lou Hodges, second the motion. Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the proposal for a Texas Historic Marker for Parkland Dedication in the City of College Station  Cemetery Project: Sherry Frisk mailed the application for the College Station Cemetery. She also mailed her check for the $25, fee however the Brazos County Historic Commission has offered to pay for it. Sherry Frisk received an email from Henry Mayo stating they have a new contract with a foundry that produces the signs. The foundry is unknown but, the prices will stay the same. Sherry will be speaking at March’s History Lunch Lecture about the th cemetery. The headstone cleaning class is scheduled for Saturday, April 4. Sherry would like to speak with the Washington Chapel about cleaning and preserving more headstones within Salem that are becoming illegible. She would like to do this with Shiloh as well.  Historic Marker Program: Linda Harvell sent an application to Gerald Burgner for a historic marker. Gerald stated he will send it out to everyone for review and discussion in March’s meeting. The application is for 500 Fairview Avenue and already has its PowerPoint presentation set up.  CS Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives: Nothing to report.  Exploring History Lunch Series: Linda Harvell stated that the lecture in January went very well however, only half ended up attending. There are concerns with the current payment process and people having to purchase tickets ahead of time. Marilyn Randall stated that Phil Banks will be speaking for the month of February. He is an attorney in College Station and will be discussing Texas Laws. Marilyn is waiting to hear back from David Fujimoto if he has a speaker from the Museum of the American GI. She will call this week to verify if they can speak for May. Marilyn has a speaker for August (Dave South) and is still looking for speakers for June and July. Marilyn would like to have more sponsors for the lunch lecture.  Project Hold Report: Tiffany Gonzalez has been working on the papers she has received from the Evening Garden Club and the Hispanic BCS pictures that were donated to project hold. She is still waiting for information from the Junior League.  Historical Home Awareness: William Wright started an audit, searching for homes and he did find a few that no longer have a marker. He will do more research into the homes once he has completed his audit. William stated that are some homes that do stand out to him, which he highlighted in his reports.  Historic Business Designation: William Wright sent out emails to three potential businesses (Pruitt’s, Jot 59, and Freebirds) to which he has not heard back from at this time. He stated he may send out another email to them as a reminder. He will look into other businesses that could potentially receive this award. Linda Harvell suggested reaching out to Park Cleaner’s, and Julie Schultz recommended Double Dave’s. Acme Glass, Layne’s, Tractor Supply, doctor’s offices, and vet clinics were suggested as well.  Historic Award: Judy Schultz reached out to the City of Bryan unfortunately, they were unavailable at the time. However, she is going to reach back out to them once they are available to discuss.  Documentary for COCS: Nothing to report  Wish List: Julie Schultz suggested if it is the committee’s responsibility to pay for meals for the lunch lecture, it could be a potential wish list item. rdth 6. Gerald Burgner stated on February 23-25 in Waco, TX there will be a Cultural Preservation Workshop through the Texas Historical Commission. Lou Hodges does not have any information at this time on the Boonville Cemetery Wild Flower Festival in March. th Thomas Smith stated the American Legion Post 159 is celebrating its 100 anniversary on th Thursday, February 6 at 6pm. John Blair will be speaking from the Busch Library/Museum. They will also recognize all the commanders such as Captain Eli Wiley. 7. Parks Director had nothing new to report. 8. Julie Schultz suggested we put HPC Website, Brazos County Historical Commission, and COCS State Marker back on the agenda. She spoke with the retired Director of College Station Library and he stated he would make a space in the library for historic books. All of the yearbooks that go back to 1949 are sitting in the display cases at the high school unprotected. Julie suggested that HPC should formally request from the school board trustees that one yearbook from every year be moved to the Library so everyone may have access to it. Also, it can be secured and preserved in the Library. She suggested that one yearbook be purchased every year and sent to the Library. Julie would like to further discuss this topic at future meetings as a new topic on the agenda. Sherry Frisk would th like to talk about the celebration of the 100 anniversary for A&M Consolidated High School. Gerald Burgner will review these suggestions and make a decision for future agenda items. 9. Lou Hodges brought an antique nutcracker from when he was a child. 10. Motion made to adjourn by Lou Hodges, second by, Sherry Frisk and carried by unanimous vote at 4:59 PM.
