HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/02/2019 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, December 2, 2019 – 4:00 pm Municipal Court 300 Krenek Tap Road College Station, Texas 77842 The City Council may or may not attend the Historic Preservation Committee Regular Meeting. Present: Louis Hodges - ( Marilyn Randall - E Sherry Frisk - ( Gerald Burgner - ( William Wright - ( Shirley Dupriest - U Willie Blackmon - ( Julie Schultz – ( David Fujimoto – ( Linda Harvell; City Council - U Tiffany Gonzalez; Historical Records Archivist - E Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Gerald Burgner. Marilyn Randall and Tiffany Gonzalez had an absence request. Julie Schultz asked for a motion to approve. William Wright, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously. Sherry Frisk, made a motion to approve the November minutes. David Fujimoto, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously. There were not any visitors Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the proposal for a Texas Historic Marker for Parkland Dedication in the City of College Station. CS Historical Project: Nothing to report Cemetery Project: The current application that Sherry Frisk is working on has been more challenging than expected. All changes have to be recorded to which she has been using the record book for clarifications. There is a meeting set up for Wednesday December 4, 2019 with professors from TAMU for a major project in the spring. This meeting will most likely discuss planning of the project. There will also be a class held on how to clean monuments on another date. Sherry will share more when she gets that information. Kevin Glowacki is the one she contacted originally (college of liberal arts and geosciences.) Sherry Frisk spoke with Lacey Lively about putting a picture on the website for the CS Cemetery. At the top there is a picture of the Memorial Cemetery and towards the bottom they will work on getting pictures of the CS Cemetery. Sherry also spoke with Tony Watson at Watson Monuments, he suggested if we did not want to do the interactive historic marker there is a typical marker that is used all over Texas. This would be used for Salem and or Shiloh. She is wanting to look more into this when they are ready to put up a memorial for these cemeteries. The marker is around $3700 per marker. Julie Schultz did suggest Hot Tax Funds to cover these costs. Julie explained what these funds are and what they cover. Julie also stated that it is legal for HPC to use these funds for historical preservation. The chairman would need to make a request and send that to the city manager if it was something HPC would want to pursue. This will be discussed further in January’s meeting. Historic Marker Program: Council approved revisions for the historical marker guidelines. If conflict occurs with the historical accuracy of a property HPC will review the findings and determine if the marker needs to be returned to the City of College Station. Gerald Burgner is going to meet with Lacey Lively and discuss having the historical marker application online. CS Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives: Nothing to report Exploring History Lunch Series: Nothing to report Project Hold Report: Nothing to report HPC Website: Nothing to report Historical Home Awareness: Nothing to report Christmas in the Park is December 6-7 & December 13-14, David Fujimoto stated on December 7th the Museum of American GI will be having an event called History in Motion. Julie Schultz spoke about the Texas Historical Commission Real Places conference on January 29-31 which will be held in Austin. Julie Schultz will get more information on this conference and share with the committee. Parks Director David Schmitz had no new reports. There were presentations or discussion on future agenda items. Julie Schultz would like to discuss about having a Historic Business Award. William Wright would like to discuss having a Historic Award. David Fujimoto would like to discuss about a possible documentary for the City of College Station and its history. Finally the committee would like to discuss a wish list about possible funding. Gerald Burgner agreed to the additions and they will be added to January’s agenda. Presentations: Sherry Frisk presented a newspaper with Lt. Col. Willie Blackmon’s picture in it from the Veteran’s Day recognition. Willie Blackmon stated that the gentleman that was next to him was his only brother. Motion made to adjourn by William Wright, second by, Sherry Frisk and carried by unanimous vote at 4:52PM.
