HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/30/2019 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting September 30, 2019 Bob & Wanda Meyer Senior & Community Center 2275 Dartmouth Street 9:30 a.m. MINUTES Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Bart Challis, David Cherbonnier, Jerry Crockett, Sherry Erwin, Clay David Hanks, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Darla VanFickell, Pat VanderBoom and Janet Wood Staff Present: Katy Peterson I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Barbara Pratt, Vice Chairman. II. Hear Visitors: There were no visitors. III. Approval of minutes from August 26, 2019 meeting: David Cherbonnier moved to accept the minutes with a name correction in section V. Jerry Crockett seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. IV. Chairman Frank Duchmasclo was out due to illness. Barbara Pratt, Vice Chairman conducted the meeting. V. Janet Wood led a discussion on age demographics. She distributed a U.S. Census Bureau report from 2013-2017 for both Brazos County and the City of College Station (see attached). When the college students ages 20-24 are factored out seniors 55+ represent 38% of the population. The seniors are homeowners, business owners, tax payers and voters. VI. Clay Hanks led a discussion on the building update proposal (see attached). He suggested that we identify our allies. He suggested that we get Dr. Marcia Ory from Texas A&M University to speak on the benefits of all the different activities that we provide for the seniors of our community. Clay will reach out to her. Katy will distribute the report to the committee and maintain a copy for historical and record keeping purposes. Clay also suggested that we organize and continue our outreach and awareness program with our elected officials. VII. Jerry Crockett led a discussion on the Goals Subcommittee. He is planning to schedule another subcommittee meeting soon. Jerry wants to identify other senior groups and combine our efforts and build alliances. He would like the committee to invite other senior organization members to and representatives to our meetings and City of College Station Page 2 of 2 suggested that a Senior Advisory Committee Member attend their meetings. There is strength in numbers. Jerry again mentioned the need for a Tri-fold brochure to hand out that would contain information pertaining to the Senior Advisory Committee, or facilities and programs. Jerry Crockett stated that he would attend the next Parks Board meeting held on October 8 at the Bob and Wanda Meyer Center at 6 p.m. VIII. A general group discussion was held to discuss the structure of city hierarchies in relation to Senior Centers. Some senior facilities are managed by a (501)-(3c), some are under the Department of Human Services, and some under Parks & Recreation. Jerry said that a listing of (501)-(3c) centers could be found on www.foundations.org. IX. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: Katy reported on the items listed on the agenda and the upcoming Exploring History Lunch Lecture that will be held at the Larry J. Ringer Library for October. She passed out posters for the Senor Fall Fest for board members to post in the community. X. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting.  Clay Hanks - Building Update Proposal  Jerry Crockett - Goals Committee Update XI. Adjourn: Jerry Crockett moved to adjourn the meeting. David Cherbonnier seconded the motion.
