HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/24/2019 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting June 24, 2019 Bob & Wanda Meyer Senior & Community Center 2275 Dartmouth Street 9:30 a.m. MINUTES Members Present: Bart Challis, Margaret Carmichael, Bryana Childers, David Cherbonnier, Jerry Crockett, Frank Duchmasclo, Clay David Hanks, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Pat VanderBoom, Darla VanFickell, and Janet Wood Staff Present: David Schmitz, Ana Romero, Virginia Godwin & Katy Peterson Visitors Present: Art Hughes, Russell Kohel, & Ann Hayes I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman. II. Hear Visitors: Frank welcomed the visitors. III. Approval of minutes from April 29, 2019 meeting: Jerry Crockett moved to accept the minutes as written. Janet Wood seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. IV. Report from David Schmitz, Director of Parks & Recreation. David reported that the project was still incomplete and we were still waiting on the furniture. He hopes that the furniture will be in within the next 2 weeks. The current budget on the center is $973,190 there is about $57,659 left from the Meyer donation. The city contributed over $300,000 for the project. To date about $600,000 has been spent. Jerry Crockett asked why a larger room wasn’t built. David reported that a study had been done and plans were drawn up however the estimated cost was over 8 million dollars. David said there is a conceptual plan and we do have the ability to expand if and when a decision is made and there is money available. Janet Wood commented that the original plans contained a pool, vegetable garden and lots of other options there were not necessary. Pat VanderBoom stated that all they needed was a larger room with 4 walls & a floor. David replied that his budget was 0 and that he did not have any funds available for new plans or a study. Jerry Crockett commented that there was a disconnect with the senior center actual needs and the engineers, architects and marketing. David said that he could bring the old plans for the Committee to review. V. Report and possible discussion by Chairman Frank Duchmasclo and a call for reports from the Awareness Sub-committee group, 2019 Goal Sub-committee and the 2019 Web Site Sub-committee. Frank made a motion to table the report from Jerry City of College Station Page 2 of 2 Crockett on the goals committee objectives until the next meeting. David Cherbonnier seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. Frank also reported on the Meyer Center Grand Opening. He said there was about 60 guests in attendance and it was a wonderful event. All the City councilmen were there except 1. The event was a success and he was on cloud 9. Frank urged the Committee to have a positive attitude. The new facility is clean, beautiful and a great start. He talked to the City Council and they are senior oriented. The new city website is going live on July 22nd. Virginia will work with the Website committee and send their concerns to Public Relations. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: Katy reported on the items listed on the agenda and the upcoming Exploring History Lunch Lecture “History of Calvert” by Jennifer Caudle. Commerce National Bank is sponsoring this event. VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting.  2019 Goals Presentation  Identify Senior Advisory Committee Member Names on Website  Facility Needs  Develop Committee & Senior Consensus VIII. Adjourn: Barbara Pratt moved to adjourn the meeting. Pat VanderBoom seconded the motion.
