HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/04/2019 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, March 4, 2019 – 4:00 pm Municipal Court 300 Krenek Tap Road College Station, Texas 77842 The City Council may or may not attend the Historic Preservation Committee Regular Meeting. Present: Louis Hodges - √ Marilyn Randall - √ Sherry Frisk - √ Gerald Burgner - √ William Wright - √ Shirley Dupriest - √ Willie Blackmon - √ Julie Schultz - √ David Fujimoto - √ Linda Harvell; City Council - √ Tiffany Gonzalez – Historical Records Archivist - √ 1. Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Gerald Burgner. Linda Harvell made a request to nominate Gerald Burgner as Chairman of the Board. Sherry Frisk made a motion to approve. Willie Blackmon seconded the motion. All were in favor and the motion was passed unanimously. 2. There were no requests for absences. No new members were present. 3. Shirley Dupriest made a motion to approve the February minutes. David Fujimoto seconded the motion. The vote was called. All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously. 4. We had three visitors: Blanche Brick and John Nichols. 5. Blanche Brick passed out a list of topics that will be included in the Historical book. There was also a list of the biggest developments that happened over the last 30 years. Two big current events just so happened to be the burials of George and Barbara Bush at the George Bush Library, last year and this year. 6. John Nichols stated that Steve Beachy is working on a State historical marker for the American Legion and suggests that we consider doing the same in recognition to the founding of College Station and its history. He also suggested that the marker be incorporated into the new City Hall project. Julie Schultz will look into fees for getting the Historical marker put up. 7. Discussion of continuing programs was discussed by Gerald Burgner. Lou Hodges, will assist Gerald in creating an online application process. For the Exploring History luncheons, David Fujimoto, will assist Marilyn Randall, as a second Project Leader. For Project HOLD, we would like to see if we can get a grant to fund an archive of the historic photos, documents, and memorabilia. The College Station History Book had some years that were not assigned to be updated. These are the years that were agreed on by each member: 2000 – Gerald Burgner; 2001 – Sherry Frisk; 2002 – Lou Hodges; 2004 – Marilyn Randall; 2011 – William Wright; 2012 – Shirley Dupriest; 2013 – Willie Blackmon, 2016 – Julie Schultz, and 2017 – David Fujimoto. It was also suggested to make the College Station Anniversary an every 5 year event. Motion was made by William Wright. Motion was seconded by David Fujimoto. All were in favor. Motion passed unanimously. 8. Blanche Brick is still working on finishing up for the 80th birthday. Henry Ellis created a website for the 80th celebration. Sherry Frist reported that there are now 63 names on the working list of “interesting people” buried in the College Station Cemetery, including 8 more African American names added recently. The Committee decided that this project will cover only the City of College Station and will not include the Memorial Cemetery at this time. It was discussed whether to include every City Council member since 1938 on the list. Gerald, suggested that the final list be separated by category, one if which could be people involved with College Station city government. Sherry, is researching the history of the Washington Chapel Cemetery and Washington Chapel Baptist Church. A detailed history would be necessary for a historical marker to be placed in the Salem section of the cemetery. Tiffany Gonzalez, reported she has not had any Historical Marker applications. Tiffany, has an oral history interview set up next month with Mr. Rich Woodward. He will talk about his involvement with CSAN (College Station Association of Neighborhoods) and the formation of it. She is also in the process of contacting developers in the area to talk about the city’s growth. Tiffany, also spoke at an outreach event. She spoke to PEO, a women’s organization in the city, about her work as the Historical Records Archivist and Project HOLD. Marilyn Randall discussed the speakers that will be at the Exploring History luncheons from March – August. For Project HOLD, Tiffany has uploaded 523 photos for the month of February. Pictures include the community of College Station and photos donated from the Public Works department. She has uploaded documents from Dr. Blanche Brick. 9. David Schmitz, didn’t have anything to report on matters pertaining to the Historic Preservation Committee. 10. There weren’t any historical programs or activities to be placed on the calendar of events. 11. No future historical items were presented by the committee. 12. Motion made to adjourn by William Wright, seconded by Sherry Frisk, and carried by unanimous vote at 5:55PM.
