Regular Meeting
April 29, 2019

MINUTES
Members Present: Bart Challis, Margaret Carmichael, David Cherbonnier, Jerry Crockett, Frank
Duchmasclo, Clay David Hanks, Sherry Erwin, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Norma Teetes,
Pat VanderBoom, Darla VanFickell, and Janet Wood
Staff Present: Kelly Kelbly, Ana Romero, Virginia Godwin & Katy Peterson
Visitors Present: Maxey Riggs, Russell Kohel, & Ann Hayes
I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Frank Duchmasclo,
Chairman.
II. Hear Visitors: Frank welcomed the visitors and asked them to introduce themselves
& asked for comments.
III. Approval of minutes from March 25, 2019 meeting: Norma Teetes moved to accept
the minutes as written. Janet Wood seconded the motion. The motion was approved
unanimously.
IV. Report from Kelly Kelbly, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation: Kelly
apologized for the delay in opening the Meyer center. She was optimistic and had
hoped we would be able to open it in May, however there were issues with furniture,
televisions, electronics and the floor in the Activity room had to be refloated. Kelly
hopes to get approval on the building in the next 2 weeks. The new opening date for
the Meyer center is June 3 with the Ribbon Cutting on June 5. Kelly reported that the
new dates would go to City Council this week and then information would be sent to
social media, The Eagle, and KBTX. Janet Wood asked Kelly if the storage space
and extra kitchen was necessary. Kelly replied, yes the on-site storage was needed
for storing tables, chairs & other equipment. Kelly said the small serving
area/kitchen was existing and they left it to save money. The electrical panel could
not be moved. Kelly reported that there would be a coffee area in the front and back
of the building and the conference room has been enlarged. All office space was
removed. Russell Kohel asked who made the decision to remove the office space.
Kelly replied the space would be needed for programming and Katy would be located
at Central Park. Jerry Crockett asked Kelly about a press release, social media and
other advertising plans for the Ribbon Cutting at Meyers. Kelly is working with the
Public Relations department. Jay Socol, Public Communications Director for the
City of College Station

City of College Station has a standard press release that he sends out for all events.
Jerry Crockett asked about a senior Tri-fold brochure for the 3 senior centers. Kelly
thought that was a good idea and said she would share the request. Janet Wood asked
if there was going to be a party with food for the Ribbon Cutting, Kelly said there
would be and invited everyone to come and spend the day. Bart Challis asked if there
were plans to put up directional signs to the Meyer center around town. Kelly replied
no. Frank asked if she had the report on the Meyer Center funds, what had been spent
and what was left? She did not have the report today but said she would bring it next
time. Frank thanked Kelly for coming and presenting to the committee.
V. Report and possible discussion by Chairman Frank Duchmasclo and a call for reports
from the Awareness Sub-committee group, 2019 Goal Sub-committee and the 2019
Web Site Sub-committee. Frank announced that Katy will not mail out the agenda &
minutes to the committee because copies are emailed before the meeting and hard
copies are provided the day of the meeting. Jerry Crockett discussed the goals
committee objectives and will write up the 2019 Senior Advisory Committee Goals
and present at the next meeting. It was suggested that a Tri-fold be created and
distributed at churches, doctor’s offices, senior housing facilities etc. Kelly Kelby
reported that the City Manager had just reviewed the new web site on Wednesday and
that it would hopefully be up and running soon.
VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report
regarding current and upcoming programs and events: Katy reported on the items
listed on the agenda and the upcoming Seniors Expo on May 8th at the Brazos County
Expo Center. Bart Challis and Jerry Crockett are working the morning shift from 9-
noon. Eileen and Fred Miller will work the booth from noon to 2 p.m.
VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee
member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A
statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be
given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an
agenda for a subsequent meeting.

VIII. Adjourn: Barbara Pratt moved to adjourn the meeting. Pat VanderBoom seconded
the motion. The motion was approved unanimously and the meeting adjourned at
10:25 a.m.
