Report from David Schmitz, Director of Parks & Recreation & Kelly Kelbly, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation: David thanked all of the committee members and recognized that the seniors are anxious to move into the Meyers center. He reported the chain link fence around the building has been removed and the contractor was finishing up lots of small details including trying to get the electronics in place. He turned the meeting over to Kelly Kelby. She commented on dates and size of the building. Originally at the public meetings the goal and request was for a 20,000 sq. ft. facility. The Parks department, SAC, architects and Arts Council all worked together and went back and forth looking at options when the Arts Council Building became available. We were able to renovate and repurpose the building. She gave the square footage of both SWCC & the Meyers Center rooms. Some activities will go to the Lincoln Center, some at Meyers & some at Southwood. Kelly announced the next senior advisory meeting in Apr il would be held at the Meyers Center so that the committee would be able to get a preview of the facility before the Grand Opening. Kelly stated that programming would start there on May 6. There will be a coffee café type of room in the front of the center where people can come in a lounge and visit. Jerry Crockett asked about visibility and wanted to know if PR & City of College Station Page 2 of 3 Communications are going to notify the public and media about the grand opening. Kelly said PR & Marketing were currently focused on swapping over the new City website. The date is not firm for the Grand Opening yet because we want to make sure that they have enough time to prepare. Bart Challis asked what the plan was for classes that have outgrown their space such as Forevercise. Kelly said that we cannot build a facility to meet the size of the programs so we will split the programs & classes to meet the size of the facility. Seniors will see more times and more facilities that the classes will be offered. Bart asked if parks would furnish the extra hours for the instructors & personnel. Kelly confirmed it. Pat VanderBoom asked about the technology and wanted to know if dancers in multiple rooms would be able to see & hear her. Kelly said that currently that is not possible but we can work toward it. Kelly said the lunch lecture program would be moving to the Ringer Library as soon as it was finished because they have a very large meeting room. Kelly also reported on the Lincoln Center. Once all renovations are complete it will offer 30,000 square feet. They have 2 gyms available. Frank Duchmasclo asked how much money from the Meyers fund is left. Kelly reported the entire HVAC system had to be replaced & the front area had to be ripped out and redone. David said he could come up with a figure at a later date after doing some calculating. They are still buying the furniture for the building. The Meyers center is still and active construction site. Kelly will let Katy know when the building is turned over. V. Report and possible discussion by Chairman Frank Duchmasclo and a call for reports from the Awareness Sub-committee group, 2019 Goal Sub-committee and the 2019 Web Site Sub-committee. Jerry Crockett asked for volunteers to work with him on the goals sub-committee. David Cherbonnier, Barbara Pratt, Norma Teetes & Bart Challis volunteered to serve. Clay Hanks reported on the Website sub-committee. He requested the opportunity to go into the test site but the feedback he got from Virginia was that they don’t have that capability. He hopes they will accept feedback after the website launches. Clay was worried about the structure of the site and hopes that it is easy, logical and intuitive for seniors versus millennials. The new website is supposed to launch on April 8. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: Katy reported on the items listed on the agenda and asked for 2 volunteers from the committee to work the booth at the Seniors Expo on May 8th at the Brazos County Expo Center.
