HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/28/2019 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting January 28, 2019 Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 9:30 a.m. MINUTES Members Present: Bart Challis, Bryana Childers, Frank Duchmasclo, Sherry Erwin, Anna Hester, David Cherbonnier, Arelene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Norma Teetes, Darla VanFickell, Pat VanderBoom, Clay David Hanks and Janet Wood Staff Present: Katy Peterson Visitors Present: Manuela Challis, Maxey Riggs and Ann Hays I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman II. Hear Visitors: As a member of the Parks Board, Ann Hays welcomed the new members to the Senior Advisory Committee and thanked them for volunteering. She said that the upcoming year would be very exciting with the opening of the Meyers Center. III. Welcome and introduction of newly appointed members of the Senior Advisory Committee: Chairman Frank Duchmasclo welcomed the new members, Bart Challis, Clay David Hanks, David Cherbonnier and Anna Hester. Each new member introduced themselves and gave a brief history of their time in College Station. Frank gave a history of the Senior Advisory Committee & updated members on the Meyers donation. IV. Approval of minutes from November 26, 2018 meeting: Norma Teetes moved to accept the minutes as written. Darla VanFickell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. V. Report from Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman on his meeting with the new City Manager: Frank reported that his meeting with Mr. Bryan Woods was very positive and the Manager’s wife was a line dancer. Katy suggested that we invite her to join us for line dancing & see if she was interested in teaching a class. The new City Manager is from Comal County that has a large senior center of about 28,000 square feet. Frank is hopeful that Bryan will recognize the importance of seniors in our community. Frank notified the committee that before each City Council meeting the members all have dinner together. The City Manager can network and influence the Council during this time. The City Council has a stereotypical view of seniors. They City of College Station Page 2 of 3 think of “seniors” as folks in a nursing home or assisted living facility. Frank challenged the committee members to speak out, be present and redefine the Council’s view of seniors. Frank is very excited about moving into the new Meyer’s Center and feels that the senior programs will really grow even more once we get moved. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on sub-committee appointments  Program sub-committee  2019 goal sub-committee  Web site committee Frank started off the discussion on sub-committee appointments by creating a new Awareness sub-committee. He asked Arlene Petroski to head up a group to contact new city council member Ms. Eleanor Vessali, City Council Place 4. Darla VanVickell, Sherry Erwin and Bart Challis volunteered to assist Arlene. The purpose of the committee is to make the needs of our community seniors known and to change the perception of “seniors” to our elected officials. He asked Janet Wood to head up a second group to contact new city council member Mr. Dennis Maloney, City council Place 6. Clay Hanks, Barbara Pratt and Bart Challis will also serve on this committee. Frank asked both groups to report back at the next SAC meeting. Frank also asked to table discussion of the other committees until the next meeting. Bart Challis asked for demographic information on seniors. Katy will research this and report back at the next meeting. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussio n on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: (report attached) Katy Peterson Reported on activities and special events for the month of January and February. Included in the discussion were:  January 2 – Feb. 11 Registration open for Senior Games  February 1,8 – Martial Arts for Seniors with Master Doc 1:30-2:30 p.m.  February 6,13,20,27 – Beginner Tai Chi from 3:30-4:30 pm by Bryan Collins  February 7,21,28–Beginner Tap Dance from 1:30-2:30 p.m. by Sue Engbrock  February 14 – Valentine’s Day Tea, Fashion Show & Dance – Frank & Barbara volunteered to work the door as greeters and check the guest list  February 15 – Beginning Jewelry Making Class 3-5 p.m,  February 20 - EH Lunch Lecture “Muster Speeches” by Jerry Cooper  February 27- Aging in Place Lecture Series & Cornhole Tournament by Alec Moreno with Right At Home VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given.
