Regular Meeting
July 31, 2017

Members present: Jean Adams, Carol Blaschke, Jerry Crockett, Russell Kohel, Jeanne
Machrowicz, June Morris, Arlene Petroski, Mickey Stokes, Darla VanFickell, Christine
Williams and Janet Wood
Members Absent: Bryana Childers, Barbara Pratt, Norma Teetes and Joanna Yeager
Visitors: Ann Hays and Jane Buzzard
Staff Present: Marci Rodgers
I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:02 a.m. by Jerry Crockett,
Chairman
II. Hear Visitors: None
III. Approval of minutes from meeting held on June 26, 2017: Carol Blaschke made the
motion to approve the minutes. Mickey Stokes seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously.
IV. Presentation by Jane Buzzard, Brazos County Senior Citizen Center: Ms. Buzzard has
been a member of the Brazos County Senior Citizens Association for the past eleven
years. She explained the history of the center and the programs offered. The center
operates as a non-profit and expenses are paid from the interest earned on an
endowment along with fund raising events. Citizens 55 or older are eligible to
participate in activities. Regular membership is $25 per person annually for a supply
fee. The center operates Tuesday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
V. Discussion and possible action on revising Senior Advisory Committee Mission
Statement: The committee reviewed five suggested mission statements. Mickey
Stokes made the motion to approve a new mission statement that reads, “To enrich
the lives of seniors in the community by providing classes, events and programs
pertinent to their interests.” June Morris seconded the motion. The motion passed
unanimously.

VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report
regarding current and upcoming programs and events: (Report attached) Marci
Rodgers reported on attendance figures for the month of June along with program
highlights for the current month. The August calendar was distributed to the
committee. Events to look forward to in August include:
• August 10 – Watermelon Social with CS Police Department speaking on
safety tips and latest scams
• August 16 - Exploring History Luncheon with Bill Welch on the History of
Landscape Architecture will be held for the last time at Aldersgate church and
moving to Brazos Center for September and October meetings.
• August 30 - Casino Day and Lunch at Southwood Community Center with a
reservation.
VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee
member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A
statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be
given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an
agenda for a subsequent meeting: Agenda items for August 28th meeting to include:
• Program Sub-committee report
• Review Senior Advisory committee By-Laws
• Wanda and Bob Meyer Restricted Gift Fund Update
