III. Update on the Bob and Wanda Meyers Senior and Community Center from Kelly
Kelby, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation and Ana Romero, Parks &
Recreation Manager. Kelly reported that she met with Chris Dyer. The Arts Council
had their wall breaking ceremony and where hoping to be out of the Arts Council
building by September. She said there would be a contract in place to start renovation
and construction as soon as the building was vacant. Kelly said that she hopes we
will be able to move into the Meyers building by late fall or early January of 2019.
Kelly said “tweaks” were being made to the blue prints and work was continuing with
the architects but they feel like they are about 90% complete. Mickey Stokes asked if
there would be accordion doors in the larger room. Kelly said there would be
accordion doors in the largest room. Kelly said she wou ld try to get updated copies
of the blue print draft to the committee in a few weeks. Craig McSpadden was
concerned that there was not enough space in the Meyers Center to hold the big
events such as Forevercise, 42 Dominoes and the Exploring History Lunc h Lecture.
Kelly said the largest room at the Meyers Center was bigger than the game room.
The Exploring History Lunch Lectures may be moved to the library or Lincoln Center
once those facilities are completed. More money is needed in order to build on a
bigger room at the Meyers Center. Mickey thanked Kelly and Ana for coming and
updating the committee.
IV. Report and possible discussion by Chairman Mickey Stokes on City Council Meeting.
Mickey Stokes thanked the committee members that attended the City Council
Meeting. Frank Duchmasclo was unhappy that only 7 members of the committee
came and we have 15 members. He asked that when a rally is called everyone needs

to respond unless they are sick. The politicians take notice and it makes a big
difference in the outcome of issues. He did want to thank Margaret Carmichael and
her husband for attending all of the rallies. Janet Wood said it meant a lot to the
people who are working and heading up the rallies to have that show of support.
Frank also reported that he met with Jeff Capps, Interim City Manager. He said that
Jeff had a good attitude regarding seniors and their issues and Frank was happy to
report that. Mickey Stokes said that we were so excited to have the word “Senior” in
the building name so that we would know where we are welcome, where we belong
and a place we are invited too. People can head to the Meyers Center and find out
about our Senior Programs.
V. Discussion and possible action on eliminating the Senior Friendly Business brochure
and procedures. Kelly Kelby reported that at one time Marci kept a list of city
businesses that offered Senior Discounts. Katy will look for the list and the Senior
Advisory Committee will bring updates to her. Janet Wood made a motion to do
away with the brochure due to the expense to the City and Lack of Interest. Darla
VanFickell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
