HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/21/2018 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting May 21 , 2018 Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 9:30 a.m. Minutes Members Present: Jean Adams, Margaret Carmichael, Bryana Childers, Frank Duchmasclo, Craig McSpadden, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Mickey Stokes, Norma Teetes, Patricia VanderBoom, Darla VanFickell, Christine Williams and Janet Wood Staff Present: Kelly Kelbly, Ana Romero & Katy Peterson I. Chairman Mickey Stokes called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. II. Frank Duchmasclo made a motion for approval of minutes from meeting held on April 26, 2018. Barbara Pratt seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. III. Update on the Bob and Wanda Meyers Senior and Community Center from Kelly Kelby, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation and Ana Romero, Parks & Recreation Manager. Kelly reported that she met with Chris Dyer. The Arts Council had their wall breaking ceremony and where hoping to be out of the Arts Council building by September. She said there would be a contract in place to start renovation and construction as soon as the building was vacant. Kelly said that she hopes we will be able to move into the Meyers building by late fall or early January of 2019. Kelly said “tweaks” were being made to the blue prints and work was continuing with the architects but they feel like they are about 90% complete. Mickey Stokes asked if there would be accordion doors in the larger room. Kelly said there would be accordion doors in the largest room. Kelly said she wou ld try to get updated copies of the blue print draft to the committee in a few weeks. Craig McSpadden was concerned that there was not enough space in the Meyers Center to hold the big events such as Forevercise, 42 Dominoes and the Exploring History Lunc h Lecture. Kelly said the largest room at the Meyers Center was bigger than the game room. The Exploring History Lunch Lectures may be moved to the library or Lincoln Center once those facilities are completed. More money is needed in order to build on a bigger room at the Meyers Center. Mickey thanked Kelly and Ana for coming and updating the committee. IV. Report and possible discussion by Chairman Mickey Stokes on City Council Meeting. Mickey Stokes thanked the committee members that attended the City Council Meeting. Frank Duchmasclo was unhappy that only 7 members of the committee came and we have 15 members. He asked that when a rally is called everyone needs City of College Station Page 2 of 3 to respond unless they are sick. The politicians take notice and it makes a big difference in the outcome of issues. He did want to thank Margaret Carmichael and her husband for attending all of the rallies. Janet Wood said it meant a lot to the people who are working and heading up the rallies to have that show of support. Frank also reported that he met with Jeff Capps, Interim City Manager. He said that Jeff had a good attitude regarding seniors and their issues and Frank was happy to report that. Mickey Stokes said that we were so excited to have the word “Senior” in the building name so that we would know where we are welcome, where we belong and a place we are invited too. People can head to the Meyers Center and find out about our Senior Programs. V. Discussion and possible action on eliminating the Senior Friendly Business brochure and procedures. Kelly Kelby reported that at one time Marci kept a list of city businesses that offered Senior Discounts. Katy will look for the list and the Senior Advisory Committee will bring updates to her. Janet Wood made a motion to do away with the brochure due to the expense to the City and Lack of Interest. Darla VanFickell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events • Don Saylak is not doing well after his surgery and needs our prayers. The committee wants to send him a card. Katy will get a card for him and share his mailing address. • May & June every Tues & Wed.: 8:30a.m. Indoor Walking Group led by Susan Lehr • May 22, June 5 & 26: Kasey Boykin with Angels Care Home Health series • May 24 : Spring Dance • May 29: Pizza & Potluck Social – Pat suggested an icebreaker game for this event. A getting to know you activity such as Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know. • June 12 Environmental effects on seniors by S Zhong Ph.D. Sign Up at the Front Desk. • June 14 Beginning Tap Dance taught by Sue Engbrock every Thursday • June 20: Exploring History Luncheon – Larry Ringer will present on the College Station Library System • June 28: Summer Dance • Utility Bill Insert will feature evening events and Corn Hole to prepare citizens for the Senior Games. • There was discussion on the Senior Advisory Committee standing up for seniors and all of our members. Kelly Kelby reminded everyone that the committee represents the entire community not just the Southwood Community Center Members. It was said that some people are hesitant to go to the Lincoln Center area. Kelly said that we need to break down the old biases bot h ways. She encouraged members to go visit and see the new facilities. The neighborhood has changed and is now mostly student housing. VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A City of College Station Page 3 of 3 statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next Meeting: July 30, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. VIII. Adjourn: Margaret Carmichael made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Janet Wood seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m. IX. This building is wheelchair accessible.
