HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/29/2018 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting January 29, 2018 Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00 a.m. MINUTES Members Present: Jean Adams, Margaret Carmichael, Bryana Childers, Frank Duchmasclo, Sherry Erwin, Anna Hester, Craig McSpadden, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Mickey Stokes, Norma Teetes, Patricia VanderBoom, and Darla VanFickell Staff Present: Kelly Templin, Kelly Kelbly, J.D. Wood, Ana Romero and Katy Peterson Visitors Present: Maxey Riggs I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by Mickey Stokes, Chairman II. Hear Visitors: Kelly Templin gave a report on the Arts Council building occupancy status, renaming and renovation plans. He distributed a proposed floor plan to committee members. Kelly Kelbly gave a brief follow up on Kelly Templin’s report. J.D. Wood invited all committee members to participate in the College Station Senior Games. He also asked for volunteers to work at the packet pick up at Central Park for the Senior Games. III. Approval of minutes from November 27, 2017 meeting: Frank Duchmasclo made a motion to approve the minutes. Norma Teetes seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. IV. There was discussion on the amended Senior Advisory Committee By-Laws: The Parks Board denied the request to change the by-laws. Barbara Pratt made a motion to restore the by-laws as originally stated. Margaret Carmichael seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. V. Discussion and action on sub-committee appointments. Appointments are: • Program sub-committee: Arlene Petroski, Pat VanderBoom, Darla VanFickell and Bryana Childers • 2018 Goal sub-committee: Barbara Pratt, Janet Wood, Norma Teetes, and Christine Williams • Web Site sub-committee: Janet Wood and Christine Williams City of College Station Page 2 of 2 • Bob Meyers sub-committee: Frank Duchmasclo, Jean Adams, and Margaret Carmichael VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: (report attached) Katy Peterson reported on activities and special events for the month of January and February. The February calendar was distributed to the members. Upcoming events include: • TAMU Active for Life, Matter of Balance Workshop Series • Computer Club for Seniors • Free Blood Pressure, Diabetes & Fall Risk Assessment • Valentine’s Day Tea & Fashion Show • Valentine’s Day Dance • “Gardening with the Masters” lecture and lunch • Free Help for iPad Users • Exploring History Lunch Lecture by Ms. Lucile Young & Panel on the “Lincoln Cent er” • Senior Games VII. Presentation and discussion was held on a letter written by Janet Wood and Mickey Stokes to City Council on behalf of the Senior Advisory Committee in favor of using the word Senior in the name of the Arts Council Building. VIII. Presentatio n, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next meeting February 26, 2018 • Senior Friendly Business brochure and procedures IX.
