Make homemade ice cream, cotton candy, rock candy and secret fizzy and fun concoctions while discovering the secrets of Kitchen Chemistry. Ages 6-13 I $45 I July 13-17 I Mon.-Fri. 1-5 p.m. I Southwood Community Center MIME PRAISE DANCE JULY 13-17 Learn the concepts and techniques of portraying a character through body movement (miming) while perform ing to gospel or inspirational music. The camp will also include how to apply miming makeup, improv and probing sessions. All camp participants wil l receive at-shirt and makeup. The camp will conclude with a showcase of performances. We w ill teach outdoor survival skills and p lay games to in crease each camper's awareness of the outdoors. Campers should bring a water bottle, snack and arrive with sunscreen on each day. Activities are conducted in a safe environment. Campers need to bring a snack and drink. Day 1: Explore Indian and pioneer culture. Day 2: Discover how to find and purify water for drinking, make a fire by friction, track animals, and make Indian hunting tools. Day 3: Learn how to make rope, survival baskets, bows and arrows , and primitive an imal traps and snares. Also learn how to throw spears. Day 4: Learn outdoor woodsmen skills to enable us to better observe w il dlife. Pract ice fire building skills and how to light a campfire w ith only one match. Day 5: Make soap and toothpaste out of native plants and learn t he techniques needed for campfire cooking. B eachy C entral Park START SMART SPORTS SEPT 28 Start Smart Sports introduces 4 -6 year-olds to sports through a step-by-step approach that builds confidence and self -esteem in a fun , positive environment. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skills are altered so t hat each child remains challenged. Parents w ill get t o s p end quality t ime wit h their child while learning how t o properly teach and support them in sports. Teams wi ll not play games , on ly scrimmages. I Ada m son L agoon TSUNAMI SWIM TEAM The goal of the summer swim team is to introduce participants to competitive swimm ing. Dual meets are held against teams from su rround ing areas. Qualifi ed swimmers will also have the opportunity to partic ipate in the TAAF Games of Texas. Participants must be able to swim the le ngth of a 25-yard pool (any stroke), and be registered in the CSISD or live in a city that does not have a swim team. Purchase of team sw im s u it is optional but encouraged. Reg is tration forms must be accompanied with entry fee and a copy of b irth certificate. If the swimmer partici pated in Ts unami in 2000 or later, a copy of their birth certificate is already on file. Fee will be waived for age 15-18 swi mmers who compete in at least three meets and vo lunteer with the team for two hours per w eek. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front; 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull , breath, kick and glide sequence; 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 100 yards may be a combination of front crawl or breaststroke (no t ime requirement). • Starting in the water, candidates must swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point while maintaining two hands on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. • Candidates must attend every session at the t imes listed by the facility. Attendance does not guarantee lifeguard cert ification. Candidates must pass written and practical exams. You may download a li feguard manual or purchase required books from redcrossstore.org.
