HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/29/2016 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting February 29, 2016 Southwood Community Center 10:00 a.m. Minutes Members Present: Carol Blaschke, Margaret Carmichael, Bryana Childers, Jerry Crockett, Russell Kohel, Jeanne Machrowicz, June Morris, Arlene Petroski, Mickey Stokes, Darla Van Fickell, Christine Williams, Janet Wood and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Jean Adams and Norma Teetes Staff Present: Marci Rodgers Visitors Present: Frank Duchmasclo and Ann Hays I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Jerry Crockett, Chairman II. Hear Visitors : Frank Duchmasclo and Ann Hays were introduced and welcomed III. Approval of minutes from January 25, 2016 meeting: Mickey Stokes made a motion to approve the minutes. Janet Wood seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Presentation, possible action on report from Goals sub-committee report : (report attached) Mickey Stokes reported for the sub-committee. The committee recommended the following goals for 2016. • Goal: Increase awareness and visibility of senior programs offered by the College Station Parks and Recreation Department. • Goal: Work with Architectural design team on needs for future senior center and community center • Promote Senior Friendly Business Award • Goal: Bob Meyer Memorial Committee should remain a sub -committee of the Senior Advisory Committee June Morris made the motion to accept the 2016 goals. Arlene Petroski seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. V. Program sub-committee appointments Jerry Crockett asked Joanna Yeager to serve as Chair of the Program Sub-Committee and she agreed. Volunteers were asked to serve on the sub-committee and will meet quarterly to review and discuss monthly activity calendar. Russell Kohel, June Morris, Bryana Childers and Arlene Petroski agreed to serve. VI. Update on public hearings concerning Seni or Center and Community Center needs assessment and adaptive reuse of existing facility occupied by Arts Council of Brazos Valley. Marci Rodgers reported that the City of College Station has a contract with PGAL, Architects to conduct a community assessment to determine the needs of senior services and to explore options for reuse of an existing facility occupied by Arts Council of Brazos Valley . The staff and public will have an opportunity to meet with the architect. Members of the committee were encouraged to attend the public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Southwood Communit y Center from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and that evening a joint meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Senior Advisory committee. The architect will present his findings at the joint meeting. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Se nior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) • Brazos Valley Senior Games • Day trip to Houston Livestock Show • 10 new PCs at Lincoln Center • Summer Activity Guide VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next meeting scheduled for March 28, 2016 IX. Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
