HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/27/2015 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, July 27, 2015 Southwood Community Center 10:00 a.m. Minutes Members Present: Jerry Crockett, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Russell Kohel, June Morris, Mickey Stokes, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager Members Absent; Margaret Carmichael, Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich and Pearl Robertson Staff Present: Marci Rodgers I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:01 a.m. by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman II. Hear Visitors: No visitors III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on June 29, 2015: One correction noted on Item III. Corrected to read: Jerry Crockett made the motion to approve the minutes with the corrections. Ann Hays made the motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Mickey Stokes seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. A presentation on National Issues Forums presented by Verna Dewees: Ms. Dewees explained the purpose of National Issues Forums and her role as a moderator. She explained the funding for the organization and explained the process used for public deliberations. The committee was presented with possible topics including Social Security, Health Care Costs and Medicare/ Medicaid. The committee referred the idea of a forum to the program sub -committee to decide when and the topic. The sub- committee will report at the next regular meeting. V. Discussion on 2015 Bond Election: Frank Duchmasclo reported that he addressed the City Council on Thursday, July 23, 2015 under Hear Visitors. Mr. Duc hmasclo stated that his remarks concerned the upcoming Bond Election and that a Recreation Center was not needed, but a Community Center was needed. The difference being considerably less in costs and he suggested the Community Center be moved from the bottom of the ballot to the number one item on the ballot. Council will discuss the language for the bond at a special meeting on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The committee was encouraged to attend. VI. Update and discussion on status of 2015 Senior Advisory Committee G oals : Committee continues to work on a center to accommodate senior adult programs and activities. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) • Games of Texas will be held July 30 -Aug. 2, 2015 • Program Sub – Comm. meeting on August 11, 2015 at 10 a.m. • Free Waffle Breakfast served at SWCC on Monday, Aug. 24th from 9 -10 a.m. • Casino Day & Luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 26 th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. • SARC Seminar offered on Thursday, Aug. 27 th from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Report from Program Sub-committee on National Issues Forum IX.
