HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/27/2015 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, April 27, 2015 10:00am Wolf Pen Creek Green Room 1015 Colgate Drive Minutes Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jerry Crockett, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Russell Kohel, Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich, June Morris, Mickey Stokes and Pat VanderBoom Members Absent: Pearl Robertson and Joanna Yeager Staff Present: David Schmitz and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order – Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. II. Hea r Visitors – Rachel Foster with the Texas A&M Health Science Center- presented information on a free six-week workshop, “Taking Charge of Your Health”. The course is offered on Thursdays from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Southwood Community Center and will begin o n April 30. Flyers were circulated with more information. III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on March 30, 2015 – Margaret Carmichael made the motion to approve the minutes. Mickey Stokes seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Update and discussion on status of Robert Meyer Bequest and 2015 Bond by David Schmitz, Director, Parks and Recreation Department – David Schmitz reported that Robert Meyer left 25% of his estate to the City of College Station for the use of Senior Programs. The city received $116,250 in July 2014 and $446,407 in October, 2014. A final gift of $148,750 is expected once all tax liability is finalized. The total amount of the gift to the City of College Station is estimated at $711,407. The second item Mr. Schmitz reported on was the 2015 Bond program. Three citizen committees were created to discuss and prioritize projects for the bond. The Parks and Recreation committee has ranked a Community Center with the inclusion of a senio r portion as second on their list of priorities . The estimated cost of a 50,000 square foot facility is eight to fifteen million dollars toward construction. The three citizen committees will report to City Council on May 28, 2015. City Council will have the final authority to approve items and prioritize projects for 2015 bond election. V. Report from Program Sub-committee (report attached) - Pat VanderBoom reported that the sub -committee met on April 16, 205 and discussed events and programs for May, June, July and August. The sub -committee will meet again on August 11, 2015. VI. Report from Robert Meyer Memorial Committee (report attached) – Russell Kohel reported that the committee met on April 21, 2015. The committee discussed best uses of Mr. Meyer’s Bequest of 25% of his estate to the City of College Station. Mr. Kohel stated that Mr. Meyer should be recognized for his generosity soon and suggested a plaque be placed at Southwood Community Center acknowledging his contribution to senior programs. David Schmitz was asked if the funds received were earning interest. Mr. Schmitz will ask the Finance Director if the money could be invested to earn interest. Jerry Markowich made a motion that a plan be developed for one millio n dollars in improv ements for senior activities, programs and facilities to include Robert Meyer bequest. June Morris seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. VII. Update and discussion on status of 2015 Senior Advisory Committee G oals – The committee received a copy of the 2015 goals. The committee will review the goals at each regular meeting. VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report on file) - Marci Rodgers discussed monthly report and reminded the committee about the upcoming Senior World Passport Program on Haiti. The Parks Department is hosting an Open House for the community on Saturday, May 2 nd at Lincoln Center from 9-12 and will provide information on all summer ac tivities. Members were encouraged to attend and help promote the event. Committee members signed up to help work the 14th Annual Seniors Expo. A tour of Georgetown and Cedar Park Recreation Centers has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 13th. This is an opportunity for committee members to see a community center with a dedicated senior area. IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. X. Adjourn- The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
