HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/26/2015 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, January 26, 2015 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Russell Kohel,Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich, Pearl Roberson, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Margaret Carmichael and Jerry Crockett Staff Present: Gerry Logan and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:02 a.m. by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman II. Hear Visitors No visitors III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on November 24, 2014 Ann Hays made the motion that the minutes be approved. Jerry Markowich seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Presentation, possible action and discussion on 2015 Senior Games Gerry Logan reported on the 2015 Senior Games. Registration is open until February 9th. Staff is projecting 500 participants this year and the events will run February 19-22, 2015. This year we are offering recreational events at no cost such as 42 and bridge and individuals 45 and over may enter the games. A reception is planned for Saturday, February 21st at Pebble Creek Country Club from 6-8pm. Packet pick-up will be held at the Parks and Recreation office in Central Park. V. Discussion and possible action concerning report from program sub-committe e Pat VanderBoom reported that sub-committee members Rhonda Howland, Ron Silvia, Ann Hays and Pat VanderBoom met with Marci Rodgers on January 13 th. The sub - committee discussed events and programs for February, March and April calendars. February will include Heart Week leading up to a Valentine’s Day Tea and Bingo. Senior Games will be the held February 19 – 22, 2015. Beginning Line Dancers have an opportunity to learn steps and terms on the first and third Monday of each month from 10:30 -11:30am. Suggestions for future programs included a session on explaining emergency room doctors and their practice and updates on Medicare benefits. Jerry Markowich is leading a free seminar on January 27 and 29th titled, “Passing Along Your Family History” from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at Southwood Community Center. Also, On February 9 th Jerry Markowich is leading an AARP Driver Safety Course from 9:30 – 2:30 pm. VI. Discussion and possible action concerning report on Senior Friendly Award Joanna Yeager reported that the committee is looking for nominations. The newly designed brochure was distributed to committee members and additional copies are available at Southwood Community Center. VII. Senior Advisory Committee Goals 2015 s ub-committee appointments Frank Duchmasclo asked for volunteers to serve on the 2015 goals committee. Joanna Yeager and Ann Hays agreed to serve and meet with Marci Rodgers prior to the next regular meeting of the Senior Advisory Committee. VIII. Discussion and possible action concerning election of Chair and Vice - Chairman for Senior Advisory Committee 2015 Ann Hays made the motion to nominate Frank Duchmasclo as Chairman. Pearl Robertson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Pearl Robert son made the motion to nominate Ann Hays as Vice - Chairman. Russell Kohel seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IX. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) Marci Rodgers reported on the attendance for November and December, 2014. Upcoming events include free help for Ipad and Tablet users, AARP Driver safety course, Heart Week with seminars, dance and Valentine’s Day Tea and Bingo. Spring Guides are available with information on programs from January through May. X. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next meeting is scheduled for February 23rd • Report from Goals sub -committee XI.
