Regular Meeting

Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jerry Crockett, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Russell
Hays, Jerry Markowich, June Morris, Pearl Robertson, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager
Members Absent: Susan McGrail and Mickey Stokes
Staff Present: Kelly Templin, David Schmitz, Amy Atkins, Kelly Kelbly, Dana Albrecht and
Marci Rodgers
I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:04 a.m. by Frank Duchmasclo,
Chairman
II. Hear Visitors : Mr. Clayton Hester participates in the Bluegrass Jam Sessions held
every Tuesday from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Southwood. He invited all to attend.
III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on August 31, 2015: Ann Hays made a
motion to accept the minutes. Jerry Crockett seconded the motion . The motion passed
unanimously.
IV. Update from City Manager and Mayor on Arts Council Facility as future Senior
Ce nter: Frank Duchmasclo welcomed Mayor Berry and City Manager, Kelly Templin.
He also expressed appreciation for the Parks and Recreation Department Staff for their
presence. Mayor Berry stated that the Arts Council of Brazos Valley has a five year
lease with the City of College Station on its current facility which will expire in March
2016. The Arts Council plans to vacate the current city owned facility. The city is
expecting the Arts Council to ask for an extension until their new location is available.
The city has designated funds for redesign plans in 2016 and construction in 2017 for
the facility. Kelly Templin stated that he would like the Senior Advisory Committee
involved in the redesign process with the intent of the senior population using the
building during the day and rentals in the evening. Senior Advisory Committee
members expressed their appreciation to the Mayor and City Manager.
V. Report from Program sub-committee meeting on National Issues Forum: (Report
attached) Russell Kohel reported for the sub -committee. The sub -committee met with
Verna Dewees and discussed the process of holding a public forum to discuss health
care. Russell Kohel made the motion that the Senior Advisory Committee participate
in a forum on health care. Margaret Carmichael seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously. The committee will meet with Ms. Dewees on Tuesday,
December 1, 2015 from 11:30 -1:30 p.m. to participate in a National Issues Forum on
Healthcare. Lunch will be provided by Ms. Dewees.
VI. Update and discussion on status of 2015 Senior Advisory Committee Goals : The
committee c ontinue s to develop quality senior programs
VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator
Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events : (report attached)
Marci Rodgers reported on current activities and programs. Lincoln Center is looking
for adults to inspire the young children after school with “Motivation Monday”. Adults
are asked to help with homework, recreation and provide a positive influence.
VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee
member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A
statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may
be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on
an agenda for a subsequent meeting.
IX. Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
