HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/28/2014 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, July 28 , 2014 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Russell Kohel, Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich, Pearl Robertson, Patricia VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Margaret Carmichael and Jerry Crockett Staff Present: David Schmitz, Dana Albrecht and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:00am by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman II. Hear Visitors Frank Duchmasclo welcomed David Schmitz, Director of Parks and Recreation and Dana Albrecht, Recreation Supervisor III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on June 30, 2014 Ann Hays made a motion to approve the minutes. Pearl Robertson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Presentation, discussion and possible action with Parks and Recreation Director, David Schmitz on 2015 budget including lighting parking lot at Southwood Community Center and upcoming 2015 Bond Issues David Schmitz updated the committee on the upcoming FY 2015 budget process. The Parks and Recreation Department has submitted requests for the new budget to the city manager’s office for review. The new bud get has additional funding for programs and a request for a full- time position for the current part-time position of Senior Services Coordinator. Mr. Schmitz discussed the gift to the City of College Station from Mr. Bob Meyer and stated the exact amount is not known at this time, but the city will receive 25% of his estate to be used for the advancement and support of Senior Programs. Mr. Schmitz addressed the request for needed lights in the parking lot for Southwood Community Center. A request to for additional lighting has been submitted for the FY 2015 budget. Improvements to the current Southwood Community Center will be addressed with the city Facility & Maintenance Department. Mr. Schmitz said that Council discussed the FY 2015 Bond at their regular meeting last week. Council will appoint three groups of citizens with seven members each. The three Focus Groups will be Parks, Transportation and Public Works. The application process will start this fall and anyone interested in serving will ap ply through the City Secretary office. Frank Duchmasclo thanked David Schmitz for his time and the information. V. Discussion and possible action to reinstate recognizing Senior Friendly Businesses Joanna Yeager spoke to the committee and stated that she would like to see this program reinstated to recognize businesses and organizations in our community who are senior friendly. A committee would need to be formed to review the qualifications and guideline s and how to promote the program. A sub-committee was appointed made up of Pearl Robertson, Ann Hays, Susan McGrail, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeagar as chairman. The sub-committee will meet and present at the next meeting. VI. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2014 The committee reviewed the current status of the 2014 goals. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (repo rt attached) • Marci Rodgers reported on July activities and spoke about some of the special events and programs planned for August. Fall guides will be available the first week of August and will include programs for August through December. VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation s hall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Senior Friendly Award • Discuss a list of improvements to current facility IX.
