Regular Meeting

Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jerry Crockett, Jon Denton, Ann Hays, Russell Kohel,
Susan McGrail, Pearl Robertson, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager
Members Absent: Frank Duchmasclo and Jerry Markowich
Staff Present: Amy Atkins, Dana Albrecht and Marci Rodgers
I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order by Ann Hays, Vice-Chairman, at
10:05 am
II. Hear Visitors : Amy Atkins, Assistant Director Parks and Recreation Department was
introduced
III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on February 24, 2014: Jon Denton made a
motion to approve the minutes. Pat VanderBoom seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously.
IV. Presentation and discussion on program sub -committee report:
The program sub -committee met on Tuesday, March 11th at Southwood Community
Center at 10:00am. Members, Joanna Yeager, Pat VanderBoom, Pearl Robertson,
Ann Hays, Ron Silvia and Rhonda Howland discussed April, May, June and July
activity calendars. The April calendar was distributed. Highlights for the month
include: Transitions of Life seminars with lunch every Thursday, A Matter of Balance
Class will be offered every Monday for eight weeks, Lincoln Center seniors will be
traveling to San Antonio River Walk and a special senior fitness opportunity on
Tuesday, April 22, 2014 with the Global Senior Health Promotion Institute from
Korea.
V. Discussion and possible action on media coverage of senior activities: Marci Rodgers
reported meeting with Mike Neu with the Public Communications Department. Mike
Neu explained one of the ways to get the attention of the media is to write a blog on
upcoming special events. He also suggested that churches and Senior Living
communities be contacted to inquire about including activities in their newsletters.
VI. Discussion and possible action to appoint members to a “Bob Meyer” Memorial
Committee : Ann Hays asked for volunteers interes ted in serving on a committee to
consider how best to honor Mr. Meyer’s bequest to the city to benefit senior
programs. Margaret Carmichael, Susan McGrail, Jerry Crockett, Ann Hays, Joanna
Yeager and Frank Duchmasclo volunteered to meet and discuss ideas.
VII. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY
2014. Jerry Crockett presented the 2014 goals for the committee to approve. Jerry
Crockett made the motion to approve the goals as presented. Pearl Robertson
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report
regarding current and upcoming programs and events : (Report attached)
Marci Rodgers presented the attendance figures for February along with senior
programs offered in March and April. The 13th Annual Seniors Expo will be held on
Wednesday, May 21, 2014. The theme is the “History of the Olympics”.
IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee
member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A
statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be
given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an
agenda for a subsequent meeting.
