Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jerry Markowich, Pearl Robertson, Russell Kohel,
Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Jerry Crockett, Jon Denton and Joanna Yeager
Members Absent: Pat VanderBoom and Susan McGrail
Staff Present: David Schmitz, Dana Albrecht and Marci Rodgers
I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:00am by Frank Duchmasclo,
Chairman
II. Hear Visitors No visitors
III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on October 27, 2014 Jerry Markowich
made the motion to approve the minutes from the October 27, 2014 meeting. Jon
Denton seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
IV. Discussion and possible action concerning update from David Schmitz on Ro bert
Meyer gift and senior center signage David Schmitz gave an update on the generous
gift from Robert Meyer to the City of College Station for the advancement and support
of senior programs. The City received a second distribution in the amount of
$446,407.25. The first d is tribution received from the estate earlier this year was
$116,250. The total received to date is $562,657.25. The City Council is scheduled to
review the contributions of Mr. Meyer in the summer of 2015. The committee
expressed their desire to have signage visible from the street that would identify that
senior activities take place at Southwood Community Center. Mr. Schmitz reported
that staff is looking into the request and explained that the lettering on the front of the
building could be changed from within the city departments. Any signs on the street
would involve approval from the Texas Department of Transportation.
V. Discussion and possible action concerning repo rt on Senior Friendly Award A
copy of the brochure was distributed to the committee for comments and suggestions.
Suggestions included adding a note that the application is available on the City of
College Station website. Also, the type of paper used to print the brochure should not
be too slick and cause ink to smear. The committee would like to see the brochure
ready to go in January.
VI. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY
2014 No action taken
VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator
Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached)
Marci Rodgers reported on activities and attendance for the month of October and
current month. Highlights for December include a dance, Holiday Open House and
The Senior Pageant at Lincoln Center. The deadline for applications for the citizen’s
committee for the upcoming bond election is November 26, 2014.
VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee
member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A
statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may
be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subje ct on
an agenda for a subsequent meeting.
