Regular Meeting

Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Susan
McGrail, Robert Meyer, Pearl Robertson, Mabelene Robinson, Ron Silvia and Pat Vanderboom
Members Absent: Jerry Markowich
Staff Present: Peter Lamont, Dana Albrecht and Marci Rodgers
I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:30am by Frank Duchmasclo,
Chairman
II. Welcome and hear visitors No visitors were present
III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on April 29, 2013 Jon Denton made a
motion to approve the minutes. Susan McGrail seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously
IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning College Station’s 75th
Celebration Ann Hays reported on plans for the 75th Anniversary Homecoming
Event. The date is Friday, November 15, 2013 and a social is planned at Southwood
Community Center and open to all. The Senior Advisory Committee has been asked
to help get the word out on the event. Ann Hays reported that a special exhibit at the
George Bush Library dedicated to the College Station 75th anniversary will open on
Saturday, November 16th. An antique car show is also scheduled for that Saturday
morning at the Presidential Library. Chairman, Frank Duchmasclo, asked for a
schedule of events from the 75th planning committee.
V. Discussion and possible action on Sam’s Club grant for patio furniture for
Southwood Community Center A sub-committee made up of Bob Meyer and Pat
Vanderboom will meet with staff to discuss the purchase of patio furniture with funds
received from a Sam’s Club grant. Members expressed concern for securing the
furniture once purchased. A report will be presented at the next meeting.
VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub-
committee report regarding upcoming programs and events. (Report attached)
Pat Vanderboom, Joanna Yeager, Suzanne Shepherd and Bob Meyer met with staff
on May 14, 2013 at 11:00 am at Southwood Community Center to discuss current and
upcoming programs for senior adults. The June calendar was finalized and new ideas
and suggestions for summer programs were discussed. Dana Albrecht discussed the
Xtra classes that will be offered at the center this summer including arts and crafts
classes.
VII. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY
2013. Jon Denton reported on the College Station Senior Games scheduled for
August 15-18, 2013. The Senior Games Committee is scheduled to meet next on
June 5th and hopefully registration material will be available on the web by that date.
VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator
Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (Report attached)
Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator, updated the committee on current
programs and upcoming events. The 12th Annual Seniors Expo is planned for
Wednesday, May 22nd at the Brazos Center from 9-3pm. Volunteers from the
committee have graciously signed up to work at the event. Highlights for June
include an Ice Cream Social with the College Station Fire Department and concerts
performed by students of the Marian Anderson String Quartet Chamber Music
Summer Institute.
IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A
Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been
given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing
policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the
subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting.
