HomeMy WebLinkAboutBrazos County TimelineBRAZOS COUNTY TIMELINE November 13, 1821 - Robert MILLICAN brings his wife, sons and daughters from Missouri and settles three miles south of present Millican. The Millican family are the first permanent settlers in present Brazos County. July 10, 1824 - James HOPE is the first colonist in the area to receive a land grant. July 16, 1824 - The Millicans receive land grants. October 1831 - Richard Carter family arrives and settles in the area now called College Station, March 2, 1836 - Texas becomes an independent state. 1841 - Petition to form a new county is approved and named Navasota County. Erection of log cabin courthouse on the Boonville town square. First auction of lots. November 1841 - 67 citizens petition the Con- gress of the Republic of Texas asking that a post office be established at Boonville. January 28, 1842 - Sixth Texas Congress changes the name of Navasota County to Brazos County. Petition for Boonville post office approved. 1843 - Brazos County jail is built. 1845 - Texas is annexed as a U.S. state. 1846 - Second courthouse built; first county roads radiating from Boonville authorized. May 9, 1848 - Harvey Mitchell appointed post- master at Boonville. 1850 - Stage coach routed through Boonville. Census reports Brazos County population is 614. 1852 - The Mitchells and one other family living in Boonville, the county seat. 1860 - H&TC Railroad arrives in Millican.
