Call to Order The 75th Anniversary Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 8:30 a.m. on May 9, 2013 in the College Station City Hall, 1101 Texas Avenue, College Station, TX 77840. 2. Hear Visitors There were no visitors. 3. Consider Approval of Previous Minutes MOTION: The Committee voted to approve the minutes. Minutes were approved. 4. Bush Library Exhibit Update Committee discussed the Bush Library exhibit. Major subjects included exhibit content, and suggestions for artifacts to use for display. Mike Neu distributed a handout of the proposed layout of the exhibit and requested input. He explained that he has not yet presented it to curator, so it is a draft. Committee then discussed ideas for exhibit content, including: --The scale model RR exhibit. The local model railroad club was concerned that enough time existed to build. B.B. Holland presented some HO scale railroad items for review, and Sherry Frisk commented that she had some items on different scales. Committee discussed possibly reproducing the period of the 1937 FDR visit to Texas A&M. --Famous people to visit, including Elvis Presley in 1955. --Items from restaurants, including the Dixie Chicken, an initial carved table from Ed Hrdlicka. --Businesses, including Culpepper related items, local theatres, and Fashions by Nita Smith. --Healthcare --Footage of the 1939 Aggie football team, if available. --Religious history of city, including local churches and the Hillel Foundation, religious items, including a piano from Barbara Moore at the African American Museum, and possibly some cooperation with St. Thomas, which is also celebrating 75 years in College Station. --Historic Homes --Military veteran related items, including maquettes of the Veterans’ Park statues, short snorter. --Incorporation of research about campus houses. --The relationship between Bryan and College Station. Mike Neu indicated that items should be promised by sometime in June, and physically available by September. Tracy Paine said the exhibit is scheduled to run from October 21 through January 4th. 5. Sponsorship Workshop (This topic will be the primary focus of this month’s meeting) Chair Harvell reported that progress has been made regarding fundraising, but more is needed. Committee summarized sponsorships thus far: After correspondence and meeting with Henry Mayo, Union Pacific committed to $10,000 rail builder level sponsorship, as well as possibly contributing substantial in-kind donation and use of their items, such as memorabilia, a heritage train, etc. He also donated $500. Texas Trading Post, $1000 Texas A&M pledged $1000 Developments regarding possible sponsors were summarized: Tom Taylor indicated he would speak with the local Citibank branch manager. Jerry Cooper will follow up with Tim Jones. Other possible sponsors mentioned included: Jack Culpepper Hunter Goodwin Committee agreed that nobody had yet canvassed local businesses not on the sponsorship list, no specific volunteer yet came forward. Members were encouraged to contact city staff, either Mike Neu, or Jacob Morris, regarding any materials they may need, such as the sponsorship packet. Members also discussed advertising and promotion as a way to generate awareness and possibly sponsorship: -- Chair Harvell requested some posters that could go into storefronts and mall kiosks, ideally 11 by 7 as well as a few larger. --Chair Harvell reminded committee that she regularly speaks on the Infomaniacs radio spots, and encouraged others to speak as well. The show is every other Monday. --Committee determined that no members have yet worked with KORA yet, and KBTX is in need of follow up. --Committee discussed publications that may place 75th events on calendar. Suggestions included:” Texas Highways Texas Monthly Texas Rural Power Town and City Magazine 6. Report-Car Show B. B. Holland reported that he had started contacting people. He requested some sort of graphic or logo for the car show promotional material. 7. Homecoming Events, planning Chair Harvell reported that she and Gary Ives attended the Senior Advisory Committee meeting. They offered to spread the word about 75th related activities. Chair stated that people from several states are returning to attend the homecoming events, and attendance will not be limited to class reunions, but also all sorts of groups associated with College Station in some way. Committee discussed several topics: --Possible entertainment, including Chris Austin Martinez, as well as actors from Modern Family. --A squaredancing event. --Storytellers, and options for rocking chairs, including possibly soliciting chairs from Cracker Barrel. --Tracy Paine indicated that it may be possible to reserve the classroom/theater room for the day, and possibly show the film, “We’ve Never Been Licked” --An art and memory wall, as well as an art and story competition for students.Libby Vastano offered to help organize --Worldfest partnership and cross-promotion in which Worldfest displays possibly a firetruck as well as some vintage automobiles, and promotional materials related to 75th events. 8. Additional Planning and Reports related to 75th Activities No additional reports. 9. New Business 10. THE NEXT MEETING OF THE 75th ANNIVERSARY PLANNING COMMITTEE IS SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2013. 11.
