and volunteers who were interested in specific tasks and aspects of 75th Anniversary activities, as well as focusing upon accumulating historic materials, artifacts, and stories related
to the history of the city. A brainstorming session followed concerning the following topics:
Finding Volunteers:
It was agreed that more volunteers would be necessary, both to organize specific areas of events, as well as for collecting information for interpretative material and stories. People
with knowledge of the medical community, local churches, and local businesspeople were suggested.
Finding Artifacts:
Linda Harvell produced a “Welcome to CS” publication from the 1950s as an example of a good resource. Jerry Cooper provided a 1979 poster of college station that featured local businesses
drawn by Robert Waldmire. Linda Schultz, suggested that Richard Gunn has mostly 1950s-era commercial photographs he purchased from Aggieland Photography.. Jerry Cooper offered to contact
him. Linda Harvell suggested Benny Hardeman and B. B. Holland as likely sources for vintage automobiles.
Finding Stories:
Members discussed networking with alumni groups related to local schools, veterans, church, African-American history, medical groups, and local barbers as sources for stories.
Committee members were encouraged to collect stories personally. Mike Neu agreed to refine the Tell Your Story pamphlet to promote more structured submissions. Jacob Morris suggested
looking through the oral histories on Project HOLD as examples of interview structure. Mike Neu suggested that informal conversations could produce good stories, such as a discussion
revealing that College Station, in 1979, was the site of the world’s largest backgammon game.
