HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/23/1949 - Regular Minutes - City CouncilMINUTES OF REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING May 23, 1949 The City Council met in regular session May 23, 1949 with the following present:'Ma.yeriangford; Councilmen Badgett, Black, Halpin and Orr; City Attorney Barger; City lulanager Rogers; Assistant City Secretary Boswell; and City Secretary McGinnis. The following visitors were present at the meeting: T. H. Sorrels and L. G. Berryman from College Hills Woodlands, and C. F. Gibson, an Austin attorney and legal advisor for the City of College Station. This meeting was postponed for one week from the regular meeting date, May 16, to enable members of the Council to attend. a meeting of the City Managers Association in Denison, Texas. The first business of -the Council was a discussion, and partial answers bT Mr. rxibson, of eight questions pertaining to the legality of certain proposed acts of the City. Mr.. Gibson stated that answers will be given by him, in a letter to the City Manager, at an early date. Councilman Orr made a motion that the Mayor and City Manager refer all ordinances, as written, to legal authority for their validity and correctness -before presenting to the Council for adoption. The motion was seconded by Councilman Black, and the vote was unanimous in favor of the motion. Messers. T. H. Sorrels and L. G. Berryman presented a petition for annexing parts of College Hills Woodland, Woodland Estates, and Woodland Acres to the City of College Station. The petition was signed by twenty-three of the twenty-seven residents o' the area asking for annexation. City Attorney Barger declared the petition illegally drawn and returned it to the petitioners for correction. The Council instructed City Attorney Barger to write an ordinance doubling the water, sewer, and garbage collection rates for residents supplied with these utilities outside the city limits. This ordinance will be presented .for Council action at the next regilar meeting'br at a called meeting for the purpose. These rate changes should go into effect July 1, 1949, the beginning bf the new fiscal year. Councilman Orr made a motion that Ordinance No. 126, an ordinance providing for the amendment of Ordinance No. 38 be adopted.
