41/ BRYAN+COLLEGE STATION PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM ADVISORY BOARD
September 17,2002
On the 17th day of September,2002 the Bryan+College Station Public Library Advisory Board of the
cities of Bryan and College Station, Texas, met in a regular scheduled meeting at the Carnegie Center of
Brazos Valley History, 111 S.Main, Bryan,Texas and the following members were present:

2.Also present were Mrs.Clara Mounce,Community Librarian,and Mrs.Laura Mills, Secretary.
3. President Larry Ringer called the meeting to order at 5:15.p.m..
4. The minutes of the June 25,2002 meeting were approved as distributed.
5. The monthly statistics for June,July and August 2002 showed increases in circulation.
6. In old business, Mr.Ringer stated he had no information on the formation of a citizen committee for
the College Station Capital Improvement Program.
7. A. In new business, Mrs. Mounce reviewed the library's Materials Selection Policy. She advised the
board about the procedure to follow when a patron challenges a book in our collection.
B. Mrs.Mounce informed the board of the remediation project for mold in the library basement. The
consultant will have specs ready next week. The project involves killing the mold on the air conditioning
cooling coils and any air vents. The affected areas of the system will be cleaned and encapsulated. Since
the mold spores are not airborne,the consultants advised there is not a health risk to employees or patrons
on the first and second floors of the library. In addition,the flower beds surrounding the north and south
sides of the library will be filled with concrete So that water cannot seep into the basement area. This
project will eliminate the dampness that produces favorable conditions for mold growth
8. In the librarian's report, Mrs. Mounce stated that the College Station Library would probably spend
College Station money for books on CDs, large-type and Spanish materials. Mrs.Mounce showed a CD
she created containing photo images of early Bryan,including the Carnegie Library,downtown stores and
historic homes. Jeanne Mitchell informed the board that the Friends of the Library will celebrate 100
years of library service in the Brazos County next year. The annual meeting will be held on April 26,
2003 featuring Leon Hale who will be honored with the Friends of the Library first Annual Award to a
Texas Writer. Mrs. Shirley Watts mentioned that she appreciated the essay written by College Statipn
Library Clerk Melissa Moore, which was published in the Houston Chronicle. The Board will send a
thank-you note.
9. The Library Board will meet on November 19,2002 at the College Station Library.Agenda items will
include a review of the policy of unattended children in the library.
10.The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
