OF THE BRYAN+COLLEGE STATION PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM ADVISORY BOARD
January 15, 2002
l On the 15th day of January, 2002 the Bryan+College Station Public Library Advisory Board of the cities of
Bryan and College Station, Texas, met in a regular meeting at the Carnegie Center of Brazos Valley History,
111 S. Main, Bryan, Texas, and the following members were present:

2. Also present were Mrs. Clara B. Mounce, Community Librarian, and Mrs. Laura Mills, Secretary.
3. President Larry Ringer called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m.
4. The minutes of the November 20, 2001meeting were approved.
5. The monthly statistics for November and December 2001 were discussed. Computer usage continues to
increase. Circulation statistics were up for Bryan and College Station; a slight decrease for the Carnegie.
6. A. In old business, Mrs. Mounce reported that the system would receive $11,453 from the LoneStar
Libraries Funds as a part of the state legislation for direct aid to libraries. Mrs. Mounce proposed that the
funds be spent on enhancing the Spanish collection of books, videos and audios at Bryan and College Station
and also be used to purchase microfilm of early newspapers in the Brazos Valley such as Caldwell,
Madisonville, Marlin, Calvert and Franklin. The board supported the proposal.
7. A. In new business, Mr. Ringer opened the floor for nominations for the office of President. Shirley
Watts nominated Larry Ringer and moved that he be elected, seconded by Jo Berg, the motion carried.
Jo Berg nominated and moved that Kathi Appelt be elected Vice-President; seconded by Jeanne Mitchell, the
motion carried.
B. Jeanne Mitchell was introduced as the new board member.
8. In the librarian's report, Mrs. Mounce provided handouts about the TexShare databases provided
through TIF monies. She explained that these databases could access many helpful resources such as
genealogy, encyclopedias, dictionaries and the EBSCO database which provides full text of many periodical
articles. Mrs. Mounce stated she will interview an applicant on January 25 for the librarian position at the
College Station Library. She is waiting to hear from a candidate for the vacancy when Glenda Duncan
retires. She said that as of January 1, 2002 she reports directly to the Deputy City Manager. She briefly
mentioned an increase in the employee's contribution to TMRS to 7%. The City also established a lower
tenure of 5 years for an employee to be vested in the retirement plan. The City Of Bryan website shows the
library's site had the highest number of hits, 35, 951; approximately 34% of the total reported. The Carnegie
library is featured in a 20-minute video segment currently running on Channel 20.
9. There were no requests for agenda items at the next meeting to be held at the College Station Library on
March 19, 2002. The Friends of the Library book sale will be February 2, 2002.
10. The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
