OF THE BRYAN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
July 16, 1996
• 1. On the 16th day of July, 1996, the Library Board of the City of Bryan, Texas convened in a regular session
in the auditorium of the Bryan Public Library, 201 E. 26th Street,Bryan, Texas, and the following members
were present:

Also present was Mrs. Clara B. Mounce, City Librarian;Ms. Angela Alford, College Station Branch Librarian;
Mrs. Nan Ross, Senior Reference Librarian;Mrs. Kathleen Dill, Youth Services/Automation Librarian; and Mrs.
Laura E. Mills, secretary/Library.
3. There were no visitors present.
4. The previous minutes for May 1996 were approved as read.
5. Monthly statistics for the months of May and June 1996 were discussed.
6. There were no committee reports.
• 7. In the librarians' reports,Mrs. Dill reported that Bryan had enrolled 1, 178 children in the Summer Reading
Club. Attendance at the 6 Wednesday activities was 2,211—an average of 375 per program. Two visits each
week are made by a librarian to summer schools for story reading. Ms. Alford reported that 720 children had
enrolled in the Summer Reading Club at the College Station Library which is a higher figure than past years.
Furniture for computer terminals had crowded them somewhat, but the card catalog will be dismissed when the
automation project is running smoothly. Ms. Ross reported that reference duties for genealogy was growing
drastically due to the addition of the computers and genealogy CD programs. The honor paperback system has
proved to be valuable service to the public and saves reference and circulation staff time. Mrs. Mounce reported
that the book,Bryan Legends and Legacies, is selling well.
8. a. Bill Barzak reported that the College Station Library Task Force Committee has been busy. Since May
21 , the committee had toured the public library in the towns of Georgetown and San Marcos. The San Marcos
Library is an attractive model that has influenced the development of the proposed Library. A charette was held
May 28 and May 29 to gather community input. A sub-committee has been formed for fund raising efforts. The
fund-raising committee has set a goal of$300,000. The College Station City Council approved the plans on
July 11 and the architect will start work on the model of the building.
b. Mrs. Mounce spoke about the Carnegie Library Restoration. The Friends of the Library are raising funds to
help furnish the Carnegie Library.
c. The automation project is progressing on time. Installation of the main computer and terminals was
completed in July. The cabling done by Britt Rice Electric tested fine. On-line public access is still scheduled for
October, 1996. ,
