The minutes of the April 18th meeting were approved as mailed. 5. In discussion of the statistical report, Ms. Mounce noted that the circulation had slowed down for the month which is traditional for the month of April. The library issued 97 new cards to Aggies during the month of April. Ms. Mounce explained there are many reasons why the Aggies use our library as much as they do: we have many items on our shelves; the parking situation is not as hectic as on campus; those needing to do extensive research use the TAMU library and our library; they use the reference material that is available in our library for checking out and does not have a time limit as those on the reserved shelves at the TAMU libary. With our display at the TAMU library, there was much publicity. Ms. Robbin Olsen, person responsbile for the display at the TAMU library, has been granted a leave of absence to be an intern at the World's Fair with the Theatre Production for Young Adults. This will be an educational experience for Robbin and will also generate publicity for the Bryan Public Library. Our Children's Librarians have been visiting the local schools and • spreading the word about the summer reading program. 6. There were no committee reports 7. Ms. Mounce mentioned in her Librarian's Report that she is working on the budget for the next fiscal year. Ms. Mounce would like to see the part- time Librarian I position increased to a full-time position in the next fiscal year. 8. Unfinished Business : Telephone System for Library. The specifications have been written. Ms. Mounce and Tim Adams had an interview with the City Manager regarding the new phone system. Ms. Mounce stated that Tim Adams had been very helpful in putting together the specifications for the City Manager. This new phone system will relieve the city's ROLM System. A log is being kept this week to give an indication of the number of calls going out of and coming in to the library. Unfinished Business: Minolta Reader/Printer. The Friends of the Library are ready to sign a contract to purchase the reader/printer. It will have a 90-day delivery date. We will be able to purchase microfilm format for periodicals. Unfinished Business: Polaroid Cameras. Bryan Public Library will receive ten cameras. The cameras will be checked out, but the time limit has not been determined. We will keep one on hand in the library for library use. • 9. 1. New Business: Summer Reading Program. Ms. Mounce introduced the Children's Librarians: Ms. Sue Sommerfeld and Mrs. Glenda Duncan. The Theme for the summer reading program will be Magical Mysteries. Miss Sommerfeld displayed her latest art work: Sesame Street characters. Mrs. Duncan stated that registration begins June 1 for the reading program. The program is open to children of all ages (readers and pre-readers) . It will be a contracted type of program. A child can decide how many books he or she thinks he can complete in the three month period. When the child reaches the contracted number, he will receive a certificate, a coupon from McDonald's, and bookmarks. There will be a minimum number of 3 books required but no maximum. The big kick-off "Come Paint Your Fantasy" will involve painting a mural with tempera paint on the sides of the old Eagle building. The children's librarians will provide stencils for those children who need help. Mrs. Bogard mentioned that McDonald's should be commended for its continued support of the Bryan Library summer reading program. 2. New Business: Family Night Movies. Feature length movies will be shown each Tuesday night at 6:30, June 5 through August 28. The first movie will be "Silent Running" a science fiction movie, in June we will also show "Xanadu," and several CTLS films are scheduled for the summer. There is also a "Travel Log" scheduled for arm chair travelers. July 3 we will show the movie, "1776." We will also show an Alfred Hitchcock or similar type of movie. "Little Miss Marker" is also a possibility for late August and another musical is also a possibility. The film series is again co- ilsponsored by Friends of the Library and the Arts Council. This is the second year for this arrangement. 3. New Business: Bookmobile Schedule. Miss Ann Watkins discussed the activities for the summer reading program and the bookmobile schedule. The Bookmobile will issue "wands" to children, will have poster displaying the Magical Mysteries theme and they will begin registration June 4. Miss Watkins will be a guest disc jockey May 31 on KTAM. Ms. Watkins displayed a map of the summer scheduled bookmobile stops, these stops are in addition to the regular stops, and it is essentially the same summer schedule as last year. Seven weekly stops, three bi-weekly stops, and one monthly stop make up the summer schedule for the bookmobile. The bookmarkers list the summer activities, including a karate show, magic show, craft sessions. On July 18 there will be a magic show and a magic workshop on August 1. Jeri Williams will dress up as a gypsy. The magician, Carl Seagren, performs tricks and illusions. Use of art, posters, bookmarks are all used to contribute to the summer reading program. 10.
