Children's circulation increased 2,000 over last year's figures. Stage Center still has not made any request to use the old Eagle building. A flyer publicizing the Friends of the Library is being distributed at the circulation desk. 6. There were no committee reports. 7. In the Librarian's Report, Ms. Mounce described the successful children's magic show. There were 315 children and 90 adults at the magic show performed by Carl Seagren. We have had over 1,500 children register for the summer reading program. She also noted that Mr. Ed Madeley went to the Arts Council to represent the Friends. Mr. Madeley mentioned it might be possible to get foreign students come to the library in their native costumes to provide a program for the children. • 8. A. Unfinished Business: Budget Update. The request for extending our • part-time librarian position to a full-time position is very favorable. The City of Bryan has requests for over 100 new employees. The City of College Station has increased its allocation to the Bryan Public Library to $30,000 instead of $25,000. Ms. Mounce noted that she hopes the City will up-grade the driver clerk on the Bookmobile. B. Unfinished Business: Telephone Bids. All the phone bids are in and Centurion was low bid. If needed, the Friends will help with funds for direct purchase to add the paging system to the phone. The library's old phones will go to another division of the city. C. Unfinished Business: Termites. The cost for the termite treatment was $1,600. The job has been completed, and Herwald did an excellent job, Ms. Mounce stated. D. Unfinished Business : Local History Documents. In the Charlie Griesser memorabilia that was given to the library there is an 1871 amendment to the Fire Department Charter. Dr. Rand Evans has offered an archival microfilm camera to film the material. E. Unfinished Business: Literacy Program. The Literacy Program proposal has been submitted to the Central Texas Library System and we expect to hear in September if it will be approved. The local Continuing Education and Community Education groups do not have adult literacy programs. • 9. New Business: Section Review, Indexes. Mrs. Nan Ross, Reference Librarian took the Library Board through a tour of indexes. A 10 to 15 minute short tour of a library section is planned for each board meeting. Mrs. Ross mentioned that the Index Tables are set at eye level. She pointed out the Junior and Senior Public Library Catalogues, Facts on File, Book Review Digest, Book Review Index, Song Index, Books in Print, and Forth Coming Books in Print. She also pointed out Large Type Books in Print Catalogues, Essay Index, Grangers Index to Poetry, Play Index, and telephone directories for Texas cities. Mrs. Ross mentioned how important and popular the Car Repair. Manuals are. She mentioned that the School of Architecture at Texas A&M gives us Sweet's catalogues, 18 volumes that are useful for specifications of equipment, furnishings and products. She also pointed out the uses of the Manufacturers Indexes and the IRS Forms. The Magazine Index and the Austin Public Library catalogue are on microfilm and are very popular. She also noted that the local history files are growing. 10. Request for items for agenda: Mr. Vic Paulos asked if many young children are being left unattended in the library. Mrs. Mounce mentioned that is very seldom, but the children are over 7 years of age. 11. Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m. (2e6 ei,AA Mrs. C. J. Allen, President Ms. Clara B.
