OF THE BRYAN LIBRARY BOARD
JUNE 15, 1983
1
On the 15th of June, 1983, the Library Board of the City of Bryan, Texas convened
in regular session in the regular meeting place in the Reading Area located in the
Library building at 5 p.m. with the following members present.
ATTENDANCE

Mrs. Willie Belle Bogard 22 17
Mrs. Richard H. Harrison, III 116 82
Mrs. Bookman Peters 116 86
Ex Officio and/or staff members present : Mrs. Clara Mounce, City Librarian;
recognized as visitors were Mrs. Wayne Gibson, Mr. Ed Madeley and Judge Carolyn
Ruffino, incoming members of the Board.
1. Minutes of the May meeting were approved.
2. Statistics and the book list were discussed.
3. Mrs. Mounce announced that more than 800 children had registered for the summer
reading program. Over 70 people, adults and children, attended the first Tuesday
evening film of the summer.
4. Mrs. Mounce discussed some research on mini blinds versus solar screen. As solar
screen application could cut out more than 50% of natural light, it was felt that
budgeting for mini blinds was advisable. The library's proposed budget includes
a request for the position of Library Assistant for the children's section. As
the staff of childrens has remained the same for more than 5 years, the justi-
fication for this position was because of the increased workload. Storytime
for the public went from 2 a week to 4 more than 2 years ago. Circulation has
increased steadily and the book collection has grown. More than 52 monthly
visits by day care groups have caused an overload in this section. Librarians
in this section have not been able to devote adequate hours to collection
development.
5. Mrs. Mounce discussed the book review journals used by the librarians when
selecting new materials. The journals include Booklist, published by American
Library Association; Library Journal, School Library Journal, Publisher'',s
Weekly, Wilson Library Bulletin, Horn Book Bulletin of the Center for Children's
Books, also used are Fiction catalog, Public Library catalog, Children's catalog,
Senior High catalog, published by H. W. Wilson Co. , a much respected company
in the library world.
. One or more book reviews is used in determining materials to be purchased.
6. Mrs. Mounce reviewed the recent work on the heatingand air cond
itio.ining. system.
New thermostats and valves will allow for controls of temperature.
7. Board members discussed the date, time and place of the regular meetings. It
was agreed that the 3rd Wednesday at 5 p.m. was approved by the majority. It
was agreed that the agenda should state: "Open meeting is held in the library's
adult reading area and entrance is th'r.ough the service door off Tabor Street."
This would give access to anyone who wished to attend, as the public doors of
the library close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
