HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/16/1972 - Regular Agenda Packet - Bryan College Station Library System Advisory Board February 16, 1972 The Bryan Public Library Board of Trustees met at 5:00 P. M. in the Library on February 16th. Present were Dr. Paul Crawford, Mr. Edsel Burkhart, Mrs. Alfred Casarez, Mr. W. D. Dunn, Mrs. R. J. Holmgreen, and Dr. T. T. Walton, Jr. Mr. Fred Sandlin, the City Manager, was present, as was Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as written. In an examination of the statistics it was noted that the circulation was up 25% over last year; and that most of that was at the Main Adult desk. It was also noted that 1700 slides had circulated. The book order was approved. The budget and finance committee noted that the budget was l$/2'"% under- spent. On building and grounds Mr. Sandlin said the status of finishing the walls of the Library was that the City had -gotten only one bid and that it was about twice what we had budgeted for. Mrs. Holmgreen and the other Board members discussed at length the un- qualified success of the Board's sponsorship of the Singing Cadets at the Civic Auditorium on Friday night, February 11th. It was estimated that 1700 attended as all seats were taken and many sat on the floor. The Cadets themselves were delighted to have such a large audience and so responsive a one. All members of the City Council and the City Manager assisted the Board in receiving the guests. Mayor Skrivanek welcomed the audience and Dr. Crawford spoke briefly on the services of the Library. The Library displays in the foyer attracted favorable attention. It was felt that the project had accomplished its purpose. Mr. Dunn asked that the Board give 111 Mrs. Holmgreen a vote of thanks. On other Library programs: ® Renewed interest in Great Books discussion group was reported with an attendance of fifteen at the February meeting. A report from Mr. Rutherford was read on the Saturday afternoon music appreciation series. Programs are scheduled for February 19, March 18, April 15, and May 13. In new business Dr. Crawford and Mrs. Richardson reported on their and Mrs. Patterson's attendance at the organizational session of the Major Re- source Center. There were nineteen candidates qualified for appointment to a six member system advisory councilwhich will implement the Library Systems Act for the Central Texas Area. Dr. Crawford was elected to the Council and made Vice-Chairman and Chairman elect. In December the Board agreed, upon recommendation of the Directors of the Size II libraries, that the Bryan Public Library would honor all public 111 library cards issued in the State of Texas. Mrs. Richardson said that we had had one request so far and that we handled it by getting the name and address of the borrower as well as the information on his library card. In this discussion the Board took up the matter of library cards to A&M students living in dormitories. The present policy is the requirement of a $5.00 deposit. It was the general sentiment of the Board that this requirement should be done away with and that A&M students living in dormitories be issued regular C cards. No action was taken, however , pending the Librarian's further exploration on the matter. Mrs. Richardson said she had been approached by Mrs. Daniel Pfannstiel of College Station who was interested in the establishment of a community library in College Station. Mrs. Richardson said she had told Mrs. Phannstiel . that she should contact Mrs. Patricia Smith, Field Services Consultant for this area. "Mrs. Richardson said she had received a letter from Mrs. Smit4 who has made an appointment with Mrs. Pfannstiel for February 24th. Mrs. Smith- said her recommendation to Mrs. Pfannstiel would be that the City of College Station contract formally with the City of Bryan for expanded library services. Plans for National Library Week April 16th - 22nd were reported under- way by the Friends Executive Board. The Librarian reported that the in-service training workshop held on February 8th and 10th had been well attended and successful with six of our community libraries attending. The meeting adjourned at 5:50 P. Me a President Secretary Approved: • '944,9-y-e---- -ie • t - " :-. _________ - _ - _ 0 . BRYAN PUBLIC LIBRARY ACCOUNT 4027 FEBRUARY 1972 ACCOUNT NAME BUDGET EXPEND.
