The Bryan Public Library Board of Trustees met at 5:00 P. M. in the
• Library on April 19th.
Present were Mr. W. D. Dunn, Vice-President of the Board, who presided
in Dr. Crawford's absence, Mrs. R. J. Holmgreen, Mr. Edsel Burkhart , and
Dr. Tom King. Mrs. Hazel Richardson}, the Librarian, was present.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
In an examination of the statistics Mr. Burkhart noted we had a 20%
increase over last year.
The monthly book order was approved.
Mr. Dunn, Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, reported that
he had collected the $2000 yearly check fromthe County and brought it to
Mrs. Richardson who had deposited it to our Restricted Gifts Account.
Mrs. Richardson reported that the budget for 1972-1973 was complete
and had been given to Mr. Sandlin. Increase in the budget over last year
was noted to be from $150,082 to $164,832; being mostly in salaries, where
a cost of living increase had been recommended. She noted also that she
had increased the book budget from $1,000 to $20,000. The Board asked
that the minutes reflect that the latest A. L. A. statistics on the average
price of a book is 12.24.
On Building and Grounds, Mrs. Richardson said she had received Suni,
land's bid on refinishing the library walls. The bid is $3,970, which
includes materials and installation. The budget figure is $2000. Mrs.
Richardson estimated that there would be between five and six thousand
left in the budget at the end of June because of several months when two
positions on the staff had not been filled. She had discussed the matter
with Mr. Sandlin and it had been agreeable with him, subject to the City
411 Commission's approval, to go ahead with the project and get it done within
this fiscal year.
On need for immediate help at the main charge desk, Mrs. Richardson
• said Mr. Sandlin had called a departmental staff meeting at which he had
said we would not be able to employ any additional personnel for the next
year. He suggested that each department in the City try to solve the problem
by calling on other departments to give a certain number of hours each week
to the department in need of help. She said she had asked the Children's
Room staff and the Bookmobile staff and that they were going to contribute
staff hours each week to the main circulation desk.
Mrs. Richardson reported on the outcome of Mrs. Pat Smith's meeting
with the College Station Recreation Council. Mrs. Smith had written Mrs.
Richardson giving a detailed report of her recommendations to the Council
for library service. Mrs. Richardson read Mrs. Smith's letter to the Board.
She said if College Station wished to pursue the matter further they would
have to meet with our Library Board and our City Commission.
411 Mrs. Richardson said she had noted that the City Commission was revising
the City Charter. She recommended that the section on the Library should
provide for staggered terms of office for the trustees to prevent the pos-
sibility of an entire Board going off at one time.
A motion was made, seconded and carried, that this matter be called to
the attention of the Charter Revision Committee with the Board's recommendation
that this provision be added to the section on the Library.
She reported on N. L. W. and the Annual Meeting of the Friends. A
good attendance (at least one hundred) came to hear John Henry Faulk speak.
The Board expressed its appreciation for an almost one hundred percent
attendance of the City Commission.
The Librarian's report included her attendance , Mrs. Kim's, and Miss
Terwilliger's at T. L. A. She said it had been a profitable meeting. She
111 reported that she was a member of the Legislative Committee whose business
it is to get the Library Systems Act funded. She is also a member of the
Texas Public Library Standards Committee. She reported that this committee
• has finished its work i. e. , the standards have been completely rewritten.
She asked the Board's permission to attend A. L. A. in Chicago, June
25 - July 1. She said travel expenses had been provided for in the budget.
Permission was granted.
Mrs. Richardson read a letter she had received from Mrs. Neal Houston,
President of the Friends of the Nacogdoches Library, who asked for help from
us in planning their library program; i. e. building a new library. She
had asked if Mrs. Richardson could come and speak to their group and describe
our building program. Mrs. Richardson suggested that she thought it more
fitting that a member of the Board speak to them. The Board unanimously
voted to ask Dr. Crawford to do this.
The meeting adjourned at 6:10 P. M.
