The Bryan Public Library Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on March
11th at 5:00 P. M. in the Library.
Present were Dr. Paul B. Crawford, Mrs. Alfred Casarez, Mrs. John McIntyre,
Mr. W. D. Dunn, Judge W. T., McDonald, and Dr. T. T. Walton, Jr. Mr. -Fred Sandlin,
the City Manager, was present as was Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian.
Dr. Walton's quote:
"Laws die, Books never."
-Bulwer-Lytton
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as read.
In an examination of the monthly statistics Dr. Crawford noted that the adult
non-fiction was up 50% over last year and that the total circulation was up 15%.
Further discussion on the increase in circulation revealed that on one Monday the
Rountree Room circulated 900 books and that at one time there was only one easy
book on the-shelves.
In reporting on the nine point program Mrs. Richardson said that she had
written to the presidents of all of the garden clubs asking if the clubs would take
up at their earliest meeting our request to place a floral arrangement in the
Library periodically; but she had as yet not heard from them.
On the Business Suite, Mrs. Richardson reported a gift of books, all new and
useable from Mr. Sam Gillespie at Texas A & M University.
The Great Books Program, after the publicity following its first near-fatal
meeting, had picked up. A number of enthusiastic people had called, come in,or been
contacted by Dr. Walton. An early organizational meeting would be set to get this
seminar under way as soon as possible. Mrs. Richardson reported the receipt of
ten sets of the Great Books from the Great Books Foundation. It was decided.to
pay for them out of the Restricted Gifts account, which would be reimbursed -by the
II/ participants buying the books.
Mrs. Casarez reported that she and several musicians were working on a ,
list of records to order. .
Mr. Peurifoy was- not present to report on Saturday Afternoon at the Opera,-
but Mrs.- Richardson said she had received a suggested list of operas from him,
and that she would order them from National Record Plan at the same time she
ordered Mrs. Casarezos recordings. ,
Standing committee reports were: - ,
The solution of the stair problem was making progress.. The material for the
additional rail had. been received and put together. Mr. Davis was ready to in- ,
stall it as soon as it could be, refinished. -
Inquiry as to what had been done about the sign on the exterior of the build-
ing was answered by Mr. Sandlin who said--it was .in the hands of the architect.
The Librarian reported complaints about library parking being taken by down
town business. It was decided that all library parking spaces be marked "Library -
0 Patrons.". - . -
On the Books and Magazines and the problem of buying-books for the rest of
the fiscal year, Mr. Sandlin said that he believed it would be in order for the
Board to send representatives to the City Commission to ask for an additional. 3000
for books, this being the amount cut froth the original book budget. Judge Mc
Donald moved that this request be made. 'Mr. Dunn 'seconded the motion which passed.
On Budget and Finance, Mrs. Richardson explained the routine of the yearly
budget which is to- be finished and, given to Mr. Sandlin by May 1. She asked'that
members of the Board contact her before the meeting of the Budget and Finance Com-
. mittee for suggestions. Judge McDonald brought up the matter of the' salaries Of =
the Librarian and other professionals on the staff. ' Mr. Sandlin advised the Board
that a study and proposed revision of salaries in all city departments is being made.

The Librarian:'s- report:
110 Recent gifts:
$500 from El Club Social to purchase a--,basic collection (classics in all
categories, dictionaries and grammars) in the Spanish language.
$10.00 from Brazos County to be used towards payment for the historical
marker.
$100 from the Kiwanis Club to' buy books for the Young Adult collection.

The Librarian advised the Board of a publicity workshop to be held on March
18 in the Library auditorium. The workshop is being conducted by the State Library.
She invited the members of the Board to attend and asked Dr. Crawford if he would
welcome the participants. She anticipated 20-25 attending from the surrounding
counties.
Mrs. Richardson reported a request from Mrs. Bobbie Whelan, Home Demonstration
Agent in Burleson County, for regular Bookmobile service to Burleson County. Mrs.
Richardson said she had discussed the matter with Miss Katherine Ard, head of
Field Services Division. The only way such service could be given would be for
Burleson County to-contract with the City of Bryan. The amount of money would have
to be worked out on a basis of expense to the Bryan Library, in staff, operation
of the Bookmobile, and books. The Librarian was asked to write Mrs. Whelan.
A request was reported from Mr. Dan Fairman, advertising manager of the Eagle,
to use the library auditorium once each week for sales management staff meetings.
11/ The request was not granted as the Board's policy statement for use of the
1
auditorium is that it is to be used only by cultural, civic, or library related
organizations.
A letter was read from Mr. J. B. Carrington, Headmaster of Allen Military
Academy, soliciting the Library's advertisement in the Allenian. The Librarian
was asked to write Mr. Carrington advising him that the Library could not ad-
vertise.
The Librarian asked the Board to make a policy regarding books library
borrowers lost by fire. After discussion, Judge McDonald moved that a borrower
should pay for any book or library material not returned to the Library. The
motion was seconded and carried.
