Tle.ffarnegie Library Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on

October 15th at 5:00 P. M. in the Library.
Present were Dr. Paul Crawford, Mr, W. D. Dunn, Mr. David Garcia, Judge
W. T. McDonald, Mrs. John McIntyre , Dr. T. T. Walton, Jr. and Mr. R. L.
Peurifoy. Er. Fred Sandlin, the City Manager, and Mrs. Hazel Richardson,
the Librarian., were present. '
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
In an examination of the statistics it was noted that the circulation
was up 2 % over September of last year.
December 14th' at 3:00 P. M. was set for •the formal opening and dedication
ceremonies for the new library building. Dr. Walton, who has had the task
of selecting and obtaining a speaker for the occasion said that it was pos-
sible to have Senator Ralph Yarborough. to speak -on that day. The appropriate-
ness of having Senator Yarborough was discussed, it being noted that he has
done more in the securing of federal aid and funds for public libraries
than any other one person. Mr.- Peurifoy moved that we ask Senator Yarborough
to come to Bryan on December 14th 'and deliver the dedicatory address of open-
ing; Judge McDonald seconded the motion, which carried.
The inadequacies of the sign on the new building were discussed. The
Librarian reported that at the two day_._buil.di.ng`,in sti._tute, which she had attended
the library building consultants recommended that all public library build- '
ing signs should be placed high, should be in big letters and should be
neon lighted. The Board ,by unanimous consent, asked that these recommenda- -
tions be sent to the City Commission.
The City Commission has approved the bid of Carolina Interior Contractors
for the new circulation desk. The Librarian reported that she had talked

to them and that there is a possibility that the desk could be here and
installed by the date of the opening.
On naming the Library,the Librarian had at the request of the President
of the Board compiled a list of the names of 254 public libraries in Texas
with a prefatory analysis. The members .of the Board had studied this survey
in the light of our situation.
Judge McDonald moved the library be named Bryan Public Library. Mr.
Dunn seconded the motion which passed. By unanimous vote the Board asked
that this recommendation be sent to the City Commission.
The Board examined with approval, the art object which Mr. Sam Sharp
has presented for the new building.
The Librarian called attention to the fact that no provision for clocks
had been made for the new building. The Board asked the Librarian to write

111 Mr. Van Buren for a recommendation as to kind and number. Dr. Walton moved
that after receiving Mr. Van Buren's recommendations the clocks be purchased
and paidfor out of construction funds. The motion was seconded and passed.
The Librarian reported that the small organ in the Rountree Room is
now beyond repair. After discussion of the problem it was decided that we
rent a small piano from Stuart Music Company for Mrs. Hanna's programs. Mr.
Garcia seconded the motion which carried.
The hours for service to the public in the new building were discussed.
Mrs. Richardson, said that for several months inquiries had been made to the
patrons and that she and the staff had discussed the matter. Several possi-
bilities were presented. After discussion from all angles, Mr. Peurifoy
moved the new library building hours be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from
9:00 A. M. to 9:00 P. M. and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:00 A. M.
to 5:00 P. M. This would make 60 total hours open each week, which would

satisfy the minimal requirements of the Texas Library Association. By
• common consent it was agreed by the Board and the Librarian that if these
hours were not enoughor that if theywere not satisfactory to the public

they would be changed.
The Book Orders for the month were discussed. Mr. Dunn moved their
approval. The motion was seconded and passed..
Dr. Crawford called for reports on the, program for making Bryan the home
of the most dynamic library in the nation. Dr. Walton, for the Cultural
Seminar said that he and his committee had had a meeting and had discussed
two projects; i. e. the securing of lecturers from A & M University to present
programs and the inauguration of the Great Books program. The Librarian has
written to the Great Books Foundation for complete information on their program.
Judge McDonald asked that we order ten sets of paper back copies of. the Great
Books. These would be put into the circulating collection for use of those
lir patrons in the Great Books program.
Mrs. McIntyre wrote to 17 organizations for information on securing free
film to be used at Family Night at the Library. She had had 12 responses.
Mr. Peurifoy reported that he and the Librarian had written seven libraries
on ?'Saturday Afternoon At The Opera►?. So far we have had one response.
Mr. Garcia reported he had made his list of recommended purchase of
records for the record lending collection and that the Librarian would order.
On programs eight and nine (Slide Collections) the Librarian reported
that the slides selected by Dr. Crawford and Mr. Dunn had been ordered.
Mrs. Richardson reported on her attendance at the Building Institute
in Austin on October the 9th and 10th. Representation at this Institute is
one of the ??Eligibility Requirements" which must be met to qualify for
participation in the LSCA Title II Construction Program.

The Art tending Collection for Children was approved for order.
The Librarian advised that she and three staff members would attend
library workshops at Cameron and Burnet on October 21st and October 28th
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p. M.
