July 10, 1968
' 40The Carnegie Library Board held its annual meeting on July 10, 1968
at 5:00 P. M. in the Library.
Those present were Mr. Edsel Burkhart, President of the Board, Dr.
Paul Crawford, Mr. C. B. McGown, Jr. , and Dr. Tom B. King. Mr. Fred Sandlin,
the City Manager , was present. Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian, was
present.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
In an examination of the statistics for the month it was noted that
circulation was up 17% over the month of June last year.
Dr. King moved that the book orders be approved. Dr. Crawford seconded
the motion which passed.
Dr. King, Chairman of the Building Committee, reported that specifi-
IIIcations for the interior furnishing of the new library building had been
received from Martin Van Buren and had been studied by him, the Librarian,
and Mr. Sandlin. A meeting of the Building Committee with the City Com-
mission was set for Thursday, July 18 at 7:30 in the Utilities Building
to discuss these specifications.
Note was taken of the activities of building which were begun (founda-
tion dug) on Wednesday, June 26, and had been interrupted only by the severe
rain storms of this week.
The budget report for 1967-1968 was examined and it was noted that
the total Library budget of 1967-1968, which was $70,217, was underspent by
7%; or $4,545.
Under new business there was a discussion of the five dollar refund-
able- deposit which is required of A & M students living in dormitories and
41, temporary residents (residents of less than six months) . The discussion
I
included a report from the Librarian on the number of books lost in
circulation. Her calculation: 1,340 volumes lost in the last five year
period, an average of 268 books each year. This figure included those
books marked off the shelf list plus those in the file for attempted re-
trieval. By common consent it was decided for the present to continue the
refundable deposit.
Mr. Burkhart reported on a meeting of the Brazos County Historical
Survey Committee on June 17 at which that committee had decided to submit
a resolution, through the Library Board, to the City Commission requesting
that the Carnegie Library building be restored, preserved, and used for
suggested civic purposes. The general consent of the Library Board was
that this matter was not its province and that the resolution and suggestions
should be presented by the Historical Committee directly to the City Com-
mission.
The Librarian was asked to convey this to Dr. Ashcraft, President of
/11 the Historical Survey Committee; and to express the appreciation of the
Library Board to the Historical Committee of its consideration of the Board.
The Librarian asked to attend a Workshop in Library Management , spon-
sored by Sam Houston State College Library, the Huntsville Public Library,
and the Texas State Library Field Services Division, to be conducted by
Miss Thelma Andrew Director of Abilene Public Library. The workshop will be
held July 15, 16, 17 at Sam Houston State College. Dr. King made a motion
that Mrs. Richardson attend the workshop. The motion was seconded by Dr.
Crawford and carried.
The meeting adjourned at 6:10 P. M.
