HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/14/1968 - Regular Minutes - Bryan College Station Library System Advisory Board August 14, 1968 The Carnegie Library Board held its regular meeting on August 14, 1968 4111\ at 5:00 P. M. in the Library. Those present were Mr. Edsel Burkhart, President of the Board, Dr. Paul Crawford, Mr. W. D. Dunn, Dr. Tom King, and Mr. Bookman Peters. Mrs. Hazel Richardson, the Librarian , was present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. In an examination of the monthly statistics Dr. Crawford asked that the minutes reflect that there was a 29% increase in circulation over last year. The monthly book orders were presented. Mr. Dunn moved their approval. Dr. King seconded the motion and it carried. Dr. King made a report for the Building Committee. Due to delay of local bidders in getting the information they wished, the City Commission postponed the taking of bids on the furnishings for the new Library until their meeting on August 27th. Re the budget for 1968-1969 it was noted that, as published, it con- tained a discrepancy from the budget as submitted and approved by the City Manager and that the higher figure (plus cost of living and merit increases in salaries and wages) would be the one on which we would operate. Mr. Peters, Treasurer of the Board , reported that the $2000 given annually to Carnegie Library by Brazos County had been re-allocated from the General City Fund to Carnegie Library Restricted Gifts. The Librarian's report included: 1. Account of her three day attendance at a Management Workshop at Sam Houston College , Huntsville, Texas on July 15, 16, 17. The workshop was conducted by Mrs. Phyllis Burson, Director of the Corpus Christie 11/ Libraries. this matter was discussed with him. He did not, for several reasons, favor the purchase of a second hand Steinway. Dr. Crawford suggested there was a possibility of getting a donor of the money or the piano. A. Yamaha concert piano had been re- commended as being one kind of instrument suitable for programs in the auditorium. Catalogs have been procured, and it was reported that such an instrument, new, would cost around $1700. The Board in examining the budget noted that the money alloted for new maga- zine subscriptions had not been spent. The Librarian reported that it would be spent for subscriptions to periodicals for the, Business Suite and for the renewal of present subscriptions, and for 34 new subscriptions to magazines of general interest. Dr. Crawford asked Mr. Sandlin if there was a possibility of using the $2000 allocated 'for the sound system in the Restricted Gifts account for books this year (since we have spent our book budget) and paying for the sound_.system out of Con- IIIstruction 'Fuhd&._ . He said there was not. Chairmen of the Nine Point Program each reported on the progress of their projects. Certain ones of them cannot be begun until the sound system is installed. Mrs. McIntyre has had her first Family Night at the Movies. She reported an attend- ance of twenty-eight. Time for these programs was changed from 7:00 P. M. to 7:30 P. M. on Thursday evenings. Dr. Crawford presented a letter he had had from Mrs. Rose Van Arsdel who requested the use of the Library auditorium every Monday night for rehearsals,-;Of the Community Singers, a newly organized group of forty people who plan for this year two classical concerts, one "pops;;' and a Christmas and Easter program. The rehearsals would be every week on Monday from 7:30-9:30 until summer. Nc rehearsals would be held in summer or during vacation periods. The Board was in agreement to the needs of such a place as the Library for the group's rehearsals and unanim- 111 ously sympathetic with the aims of the group but regretfully denied the request LIBRARY ACCOUNT 113 AUGUST 1968 ACCOUNT NAME BUDGET EXPEND UNEXPEND ADMINISTRATIVE 7,680,00 1,250.00 6,430.00 SKILLED LABOR 17,917.00 3,270.00 14,647.00 LABOR OPERATIONS 21,774.00 4,910.97 16,863.03 OFFICE SUPPLIES 1,800.00 208.34 1,591.66 FUEL SUPPLIES 150.00 150.00 MOTOR VEHICLES-GAS,OIL,GREASE 600.00 49.74 550.26 LAUNDRY & CLEANING 300.00 13.18 286.82 OTHER SUPPLIES 100.00 100.00 COMMUNICATIONS 600.00 92.41 507.59 HIRE OF EQUIPMENT 150.00 150.00 COURT COSTS, DAMAGES 50.00 50.00 TRAVELING EXPENSES 500.00 52.17 447.83 UTILITIES 700.00 171.83 528.17 MISCELLANEOUS 100.00 10.00 90.00 ASSOCIATIONAL DUES 100.00 100.00 BUILDING & GROUNDS 500.00 228.62 271.38 FURNITURE & FIXTURES 250.00 250.00 MOTOR VEHICLES-TIRES, TUBES 500.00 53.19 446.81 110 BINDING BOOKS & MAGAZINES 4,000.00 195.57 3,804.43 SUB-TOTAL 57,771.00 10,506.02 47,264.98 CAPITAL OUTLAY FURNITURE & FIXTURES 1,500.00 98.00 1,402.00 BOOKS, MAGAZINES, PAPERS 12,000.00 1,698.77 10,301.23 TOTAL 71,271.00 12,302.79 58,968.21 CARNEGIE LIBRARY MON'1'ALY R .
