GOAL: The soal of the Senior Advisor Committee is to have a senior center. (updated annually) college Station is one of the few Texas cities without a Senior Center. Seniors have no place to go for quiet conversations, playing cards and dominoes, low impact exercises, computer classes, lectures, dances and lunches. Activities for seniors are wedged into scattered buildings at times when they are not in use by others. GOAL: :Estal?1ha senior=di' .2_3. lace (updated annually) Older adults need a place to meet that is centrally located with easy access. This place would offer one location where seniors could meet, obtain information on services and programs available to them. Action Steps: ED Create a steering committee to nominate a non-profit organization to help raise funds for a future center • Ask City of College Station to provide an interim place for seniors to meet until a permanent facility is built O Research grants and funding for senior facilities and programs GOAL: Collaborate with staff at the Larr Rin.er Librar to offer sr°.rams for adults usdated annually) The library will be expanding in the near future and staff has asked the Senior Advisory Committee to assist in suggesting programs that would encourage adults to use the facility. Action Steps: s/ Meet with library staff O Assist library staff in establishing programs for older adults GOAL: Promote Health Lifest le Pro rams for seniors updated annually) Media resources are continually encouraging all Americans to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly The Senior Advisory committee can communicate current and accessible local resources to residents to promote healthy lifestyles especially for seniors. Action Steps: O Compile and maintain a current list of diet and exercise programs available in the community for seniors, i.e.,programs provided by medical providers (The Med, St Joseph's, Scott& White). O Publish this list of diet and exercise programs both in hardcopy periodically and maintain a current listing of diet and exercise programs on the City of College Station website. O Communicate the intergenerational nature of city parks and detail which parks have facilities especially designed for seniors. This information needs to also be provided on the City of College Station website with a map that provides the location of the parks. O Promote Healthy Lifestyle programs for seniors (lunch seminars) offered by hospitals and Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging O Design program to promote volunteerism among seniors in community O Develop brochure with information on each city park and list on website GOAL: Provide a listin. of Senior Discounts Available in the Communit updated annually) Older adults may have reduced or set incomes that would benefit from any discounts available to them. Businesses have historically offered reduced rates to older adults and a listing would be beneficial for individuals as well as advertisement for the businesses. Action Steps: El Compile and maintain a list of current businesses offering discounts to seniors O Publish this list both in hardcopy periodically and maintain a current listing on City of College Station website. i i Pig, BEEN - .,,-, V- C72..! Payne Lara, of Navasota, stands near the prototype of "Liberty or Death." Thanks Sent to the Frisco Heloers "Thank you to the College Station Team that attended the TRAPS Institute in Frisco on March 5th and helped me with the awards presentations. I was truly blessed to have each of you there to help set up, carry awards to the president, take photos, run the computer, and make it all happen. Thank you Jana, Scott, Jenny, Peter, Geri, and TC for the little and big things you did to make the awards and citations events go smoothly. You guys are champs and you make this world a better place for everyone!! I am humbled by your generosity and selflessness!! Sheila Walker 0 enin ernOnieS Howdy! Thank you all so much for all of your help in making this...in my opinion on of the best opening ceremonies that we have had, and we have had some really good ones in the past. A few times last night during and after the event some of our customers, citizens of our community, came to me sharing how much they enjoyed, not only last nights event, but past events. I also hear them state how much they enjoy our Parks and Recreation Department for conducting and providing all the opportunities, events, and doing it with such class and enjoyment. It is sure rewarding to me when we hear our citizens say and feel so good about our City and the Parks and Recreation Department As a department that also brings in tourism, it also feels good to hear people who visit say how nice our facilities are and how the people here are so friendly and positive. I often wonder how important Parks and Recreation Departments are at attracting new people and businesses to a community and retaining people who current live in a community. I think that most people get attracted to and stay in communities that make THEM feel special, good, and wanted, and I think that the Parks and Recreation Department often provides this type of service and that was evident at last nights event. You all did such a wonderful job of making our customers and players feel special, like you often do. It was a blast to hear little nine year old Shelby Smith sing the National Anthem and watch our very own Hannah Spacek (Pitch, Hit, and Run, National Champion Runner, and Third Place in the Nation overall) throw out the first pitch. Thank you again and hope that you all can attend again this Fall. Sincerely, David "Spud" Hudspeth Recreation Supervisor On behalf of ASA and the BVGSA I would also like to thank the City of College Station Parks and Rec department for your tireless work to make this program what it is, I agree with David it was one of the best opening ceremonies we have had since I have been here in 4 yrs. Thanks again! Fred Burris Classic Century Homes Armadillo Dash Kudos "Dear College Station Parks and Recreation: Thank you for your contribution to the 4th Annual Armadillo Dash Half Marathon and 5K. Your participation allowed us to successfully serve 1,570 runners that ran in the March 7, 2010 Half Marathon and 5K. The race promotes health and physical activity in our community, and provides a structured event for avid runners as well as those working toward a healthier lifestyle. This year was our best yet, and we look forward to getting better and bigger every year! Your participation is so appreciated. We look forward to continuing to grow the Armadillo Dash nonprofit organization and race to benefit children in need in the Brazos Valley. This year we plan to continue support of Scotty's House Child Advocacy Center of the Brazos Valley and Still Creek Boys and Girls Ranch. These deserving organizations benefit from our community effort. Thank you again for your support and generosity. We look forward to planning the fifth Annual Armadillo Dash March 2010! Sincerely.
