Senior Center Sub-committee Meeting

Meeting Notes
Members Present: Anne Hazen, Joyce Davis, Neal Nutall and Jean Roberts
Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator
I. Discussion, consideration and possible action on senior center sub-committee goals
and objectives Anne Hazen agreed to chair the sub-committee. The group discussed
the objectives to be presented to City Council during the upcoming budget hearings.
1. Secure space for seniors to meet
2. The space needs to be senior-friendly (Accessibility, lighting, parking,
comfortable furnishings, etc)
3. Assist in the planning of programs and activities for seniors
4. Develop policies and procedures for senior-use of the space
IL Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning attending council budget
hearing meetings The Council Budget workshops are scheduled as follows:
-Monday, August 17, 2009 - Council Chambers at 12:00 PM
-Thursday,August 20, 2009 - Carter Creek Training Room at 4:00 PM
-Friday, August 21, 2009 - Council Chambers at 4:00 PM
The Council budget public hearings are scheduled as follows:
-Thursday, August 27, 2009 - Council Chambers at 7:00pm
-Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - Council Chambers at 7:00pm
Once the agenda's are ready, Marci will notify the committee.
The group discussed speaking points and considered who would like to speak.
• Anne Hazen—will address the need to secure a place for seniors to meet
• Jean Roberts—importance of a place to meet and feel safe
• Neal Nutall - importance of a senior-friendly community for new seniors
moving into the area
To be contacted and asked:
• Joanna Yeager- History of the senior center project
• Laura Holmes—the need for a place to offer programs and activities for
seniors
• Clifford Linsey- reporting on the fact that most cities have at least one senior
center
Anne Hazen plans to attend the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board this evening and to
speak under"Hear Visitors". She will state the above concerns and plans for the Senior
Center Sub-Committee to address the city council during the budget hearings. Also,
Anne asked the committee to be notified when the Council will be discussing the Parks
and Recreation Budget,
III.Adjourn The meeting ended at approximately 10:55 a.m.

• Matter of Balance Class - August 19 —October 7, 10:30 a.m. — 12:30p.m. Teen Center
• Free Beginning Computer Classes Thursdays August 6-27 and Fridays, August 7-28 from
9:30 a.m.- 11:00am held at the Center for Regional Services
• August 31st Xtra Education Registration begins for Fall classes
Looking ahead:
• Fall Xtra Education classes for seniors begin. Classes include, computer, get fit with a
trainer, beginning bridge, Tai Chi, genealogy, digital photography and more.

• 40th Annual Citizen Police Academy is starting on Tuesday, September 8, 2009.
Each of the nine classes will give you an insight into the different divisions in the Police
department. Classes meet every Tuesday, from 6:30pm- 9:30pm, at the police dept.
• September 18th Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging FREE Workshop at The Center for
Regional Services "How to Get the Most out of Your Doctor Visit" 11:00-1:00 pm—
