Burns, Joyce Davis, Anne Hazen, Clifford Linsey,Neal Nutall, Colleen Risinger, Jean Roberts, Dorthea Robinson, Ron Silvia and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Jon Denton, Dorothy Hernandez, Jack Hernandez,Neal Nutall Visitors Present: Robert Meyer Staff Present: Peter Lamont, Recreation Superintendent and Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order The meeting was called to order by Ron Silvia, Chairman at 10:07 am II. Welcome guests and visitors Robert Meyer, visitor HI. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on August 31, 2009 Colleen Risinger made the motion to approve the minutes. E.E. Burns seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Presentation, possible action and discussion on a "Senior Place" -Ronnie Gipson, Director of Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging Mr. Gipson described the duties and responsibilities of the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging and the services they offer in the seven counties. He said they have 38 different programs and 15 active senior centers. Mr. Gipson stated that the city of Bryan and the city of College Station are both looking to develop senior programs and need space for seniors to meet. He presented the idea of Bryan and College Station coming together to operate a senior center at the Center for Regional Services located on 29`x` street and Carter Creek. Currently,the center has 7,200 sq.ft. of space available to rent at a base rate of.75 a sq. ft. Build-out costs would increase the price, but to consider the advantage of splitting the cost between the two cities. This location borders the two cities. The building is owned by the Brazos Valley Affordable Housing Corporation and serves as a one stop shop for regional services. The committee decided to table any action. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action on available funding for seniors -Peter Lamont, Recreation Superintendent. Mr. Lamont reported that he had met with Jon Denton and Marci Rodgers to discuss possible grants and other funding opportunities for older adults. Mr. Lamont said that the Texas Parks& Wildlife Department has offered matching grants in the past for construction of facilities, but nothing is available presently. Jon Denton will visit with staff at A&M to learn about current funding sources that might be available. Marci Rodgers reported that space was available at the Tractor Supply Strip Center on the corner of Texas Ave and Harvey Mitchell Parkway. The space was previously occupied by We Rent It. The space available is 8,025 sq. ft for$ 8,800.00 per month, plus triple net of.20/sq. ft. for a total of$10,400.00 per month or $124,800.00 per year. Marci Rodgers also spoke with John Clark to discuss the former C.C. Creations space on Holleman near Welborn. The space available is 88,000 sq. ft. and would be too large for our needs, VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator report regarding upcoming programs and events. (report attached) VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Clifford Linsey made the motion to invite City Council members to the Senior Advisory Committee regular meetings. Anne Hazen seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Anne Hazen suggested we start with the Mayor. Staff provide information on Brenham's Senior Center 501 3C organization VIII. Looking ahead: • Xtra Ed Classes for Seniors starting in October: Bridge 101, Computer Classes (Create Holiday Cards, 101, 102, e-mail, computer maintenance), Tai Chi and Get Fit with a trainer. o October 7 Computer Club for Seniors • October 15, Senior Fall Fest American Pavilion, 4:00 -7:00 pm on Thursday, October 15th(October 22nd rain date). Free hamburgers, hotdogs, cake walk, entertainment and door prizes. o October 22- November 19th Digital Photography class Thursdays, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the EXIT. The cost of the class is $45.00. • October 29 Senior Dance Conference Center, 7:00pm-9:00pm. The cost is $5.00/person pay at the door. • November 11,2009 - Veteran's Day Ceremony & BBQ Dinner at Veteran's Park. Activities begin at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00 available at CS Conference Center.
