College Station Parks and Recreation Department
MEETING: Senior Advisory Committee, Senior Center Sub-Committee
Meeting with Tony Cisneros, Parks and Recreation Department Director and
Gary Erwin, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chairman
NOTES:
Members Present: Ron Silvia, Neal Nutall, Joyce Davis and Joanna Yeager
Staff: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator
Members introduced themselves and Ron Silvia explained that the purpose of the meeting was to
share concerns for an interim senior center and to get direction on developing a plan to establish
a place where seniors could meet. Joanna made comments on behalf of Anne Hazen who could
not attend. (see attachment from Anne Hazen) Positive discussion followed on finding a space
to rent such as an empty store front that was in a good location and had easy access and parking.
The seniors would like to have a place they could call home. The interim senior center could
provide information on senior services available in the community, offer classes, programs and
activities that were of interest to older adults. The center could also serve as a meeting place for
seniors to visit and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Gary Erwin was supportive of the idea. The item will be placed on the next agenda for the
February 10, 2009 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Tony Cisneros
suggested that all properties be considered and Marci Rodgers will visit with property managers
to discuss available space and costs. Tony Cisneros informed the group that this is the time to
consider costs for the 2010 budget.
The meeting concluded at 9:35 a.m.
