Burns, Joyce Davis, Rick Heaney, Dorothy Hernandez, Jack Hernandez, Laura Holmes, Edgar Jones, Robert Meyer, Neal Nutall, Donald Pirwitz, Raymond Reed, Yvonne Stevens, Dorren Todd and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Haskell Monroe and Colleen Risinger Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:04am by Robert Meyer, Chairman II. Hear visitors: Ralph Leisy attended as a visitor III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on September 25, 2006 Rick Heaney made the motion to approve the minutes. E.E. Burns seconded the motion. The motion passed. IV. Approval of minutes from special meeting on October 4, 2006 Rick Heaney made the motion to approve the minutes. E.E. Burns seconded the motion. The motion passed. V. Presentation on the Life Trail System at Central Park by David Wood, Parks Planner Marci Rodgers introduced David Wood. David Wood reported to the committee that funding had been approved for the Life Trail System to be installed along the trail in Central Park. The system is a workout system designed for senior citizens and will include ten stations. Funding will be from a Community Development Block Grant which is federally funded. The project should be installed in two to three months. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on tour of Allen and Irving Senior Centers (see attached report) Senior Advisory Committee Members: Dorothy Hernandez, Joyce Davis, Joanna Yeager, Donald Pirwitz and Yvonne Stevens toured Allen Senior Recreation Center and Irving Heritage Senior Center on Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Architect, Gary DeVries with BRW, met the group at the Allen Senior Center. Each member who visited the centers commented on the two facilities. E.E. Burns made the motion that Bob Meyer be the contact for the Senior Advisory Committee and address questions from the architects during the conceptual design. Neal Nutall seconded the motion. The motion passed. VII. Discussion, consideration and possible action of Senior Services Coordinator report regarding upcoming programs and events. (see attached report) • Exploring History Lunch/Lecture November 15th Marci Rodgers asked that a meeting of the "Promotion of Senior Programs Sub- committee" plan a time to meet in November. The sub-committee agreed to meet on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 9:30am at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department office. The committee was asked to assist at each of the Exploring Lunch/Lectures and serve as greeters or work the registration table. A sign-up sheet was distributed. VIII. Next meeting: Monday, November 27, 2006 IX. Upcoming Events: November 3 & 17 College Station Friday Bridge Group The First and Third Friday Bridge group welcomes seniors who enjoy the game of bridge. The group meets the first and third Friday of each month from 9:OOam-12:00 noon at the College Station Teen Center located at 1520 Rock Prairie Road. No partners needed and it is free! If interested in having your name added to the list of participants, please contact College Station Senior Services Coordinator at 764-6371. Computer Classes November 6 & 8 Quicken Quicken is a program to help manage your income and expenses. Learn to set-up checking accounts, transactions, balances and generate reports. This class is offered for a fee of$30.00. Registration is held at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department located in Central Park, 1000 Krenek Tap Road. Class size is limited. November 7 & 9 Computer User Tips Class for Seniors Seniors interested in improving their computer skills and learning new applications are encouraged to register for the Computer User Tips Class for a fee of$30.00. Registration is held at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department located in Central Park, 1000 Krenek Tap Road. Class size is limited. November 8 College Station Computer Club for Seniors The Computer Club for Seniors meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at no cost to the participants from 9:OOam-10:30am. On Wednesday,November 8th, the Club meets at the College Station Utilities Service Center at 1601 Graham Road. The speaker is Mary Kosh and the topic is "Ebay for Dummies". November 8- Senior World Passport Program presents India The College Station Parks and Recreation Department and the International Programs Office at Texas A&M University are co-sponsoring this free program for senior citizens. This is the fifth session in a series of six. Join us at the College Station Teen Center located at 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. starting at 10:00am. Each session covers geography, government, culture, technology, education and agriculture in the country discussed. Enjoy samples of food and receive a passport to be stamped for each session you attend. To reserve your place and for more information contact 862-6700 or 764-6371. November 9 - Play 42 If you enjoy the game of 42 then join the "42 Group" ! FREE! They meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 9:30am-11:30am at the College Station Teen Center located at 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. To reserve your place and for more information contact 862-6700 or 764-6371 November 15 - Exploring College Station History Lunch/Lecture series The City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee and the Senior Advisory Committee host lunch/lectures each month on the third Wednesday at the College Station Conference Center located at 1300 George Bush Drive. Lunch is by reservation and is served at 11:30am. Donations are appreciated. Steve Beachy, Director of College Station Parks and Recreation Department, will speak on the history of the parks system at 12:00 noon. Please call 764-3491 to make your reservation. November 27 -The Senior Advisory Committee The College Station Senior Advisory Committee meets the last Monday of each month at 10:00am. The meetings are held at the College Station Teen Center located at 1520 Rock Prairie Road. For more information contact College Station Senior Services at 764-6371. We were met by Carrie Cessna, Recreation Services Manager for the Allen Parks and Recreation Department. Also, Gary Devries with BRW Architects met and toured the facility with our group. The Center is 25,000 square feet and has a membership of 1100. The cost of construction was $4.8 million. The center is a recreation center for persons 50 years of age and older and is operated by the Allen Parks and Recreation Department. They offer a variety of programs, trips and special events, activities and classes that are low-cost or free. Membership to the center is $5.00 a year for residents and $24.00 a year for non-residents. Staff includes one full-time supervisor, three full-time coordinators and six part-time recreation assistants. The facility is open from 8:OOam-5:OOpm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 8:OOam-8:OOpm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The facility includes a fitness room, craft room (450 sq.ft.), game room (1200 sq.ft.), conference room for staff meetings, commercial kitchen and dining room, classrooms, reception area and offices for staff and a 6,000 square foot multi-purpose room with hardwood floors and stage. The multi-purpose room divides into three rooms. Visitors walk into the entrance under a covered driveway and into a large living room with see through fireplace and piano. Transportation is available to and from the center. The center has a commercial size kitchen and offers lunch daily. Computer classes are offered in the computer lab at the Allen Public Library and a natatorium is located in Heritage Village which is nearby. Noteworthy: • Bench seating in halls • Windows and glass allowed for natural light • See through gas fire place in living area with piano • 8'halls • Fitness Center across from front desk with glass wall for easy viewing • Workbench in storage area for maintenance with washer and dryer • Wide doors on storage closets , Air Irving Heritage Senior Center } • Of I • Irving Heritage Senior Center The City of Irving has a population of 200,000 citizens. The Heritage Senior Center has 19,000 members with 9,000 active members and averages 1500 visitors a week. The Center opened in December of 2003 and is located on six acres. The facility is 30,000 square feet including a 10,000 square foot indoor pool. The cost was eight million dollars and includes the furnishings and landscaping. The design is in line with a historic theme. Membership is open to citizens 50 and over and a variety of classes, socials, exercise, dance and arts and crafts. Annual membership is $5.00 for residents and $24.00 for non-Irving residents. Transportation is available for seniors 60 years and older who do not have other means of transportation. A continental breakfast is served from 8:00am- 10:00am and a hot lunch Monday through Friday at noon for seniors 60 and over for a donation of $1.00. Staff includes a Full-time Center Supervisor and several Recreation Specialists, office assistants, custodians and drivers. Volunteers are used to assist with answering questions and the phone at the front desk. This center included a gift shop with items for sale that the seniors had made. The center receives 20% of the profit. The center has a large wood floor multipurpose room (7,000 sq.ft.) and divides into four rooms. A stage is located in the corner.
